Ultrasound?
on: June 09, 2008, 10:45:09 PM
A question for you folk's...have any of you had ultrasound as a form of treatment ???

What it is, eleven years ago I had a bike accident, what happened (briefly) is my heel hit a steel barrier at between 60 - 70mph and broke in half (vertically), well I was only 20 so I never bothered with following the medical advice (even took the cast off to go clubbing ::)). Thing is now I'm getting on a bit (31) it never stops aching, and is actually painfull to stand on for any given length of time :(

Well I went to the doc's a few months ago and have got to see a podiatris on wendsday to maybe have ultrasound treatment, thing is I don't really know what to expect , so if anyone's got some clue's, please let me know.

Thanks :)

Ultrasound therapy is pretty simple.  They slime up your ankle with conductive gel and run an ultrasound doodad over it for a while.  Then they wipe off the gel and that's pretty well it.

Did you tell the doc what you did, or have you had x-rays?  I would suggest getting a full work up done to see if the bones are out of alignment, or if you are suffering from arthritis like I am.  You may also want to look into custom orthotics.  I have them- I'm not certain if they help or not, but everyone else tells me they do.

I haven't had an x ray on it since the accident, but I probably need one :(

As for the orthotics, I think that a possibility too ::)

Thanks mate :)

Get the x-rays done first, or at least do what the nice doctor tells you this time around.  There's a possibility that if the bone fragments are misaligned, they may be able to re-fracture and re-align them surgically, which will be a pain in the butt because it will mean you are immobile for a while, but at least the problem will be (more or less) fixed.  If you aren't suffering from post traumatic arthritis now, you will be eventually.

The big bone in your heel (calcaneous) isn't one to mess with as it not only coveres your heel, it also attached the majority of your foot to your leg.  Busting it screws up the whole foot and misaligns everything, which can also be a source of problems and pain.

Basically anything they say they want you to do, do.  I was never one to listen to doctors either and that's probably why my foot is messed up too.  I shattered the same bone, and it's now held together with 8 pins and a steel plate, and the joint is riddled with arthritis, making it difficult for me to stand or walk for extended periods, and causing pain all the time.  I went to physiotherapy, I have orthotics, I take arthritis pills, and I try to take glucosamine.  I'm not certain if any of them help, but they are all worth a shot- if any of them help, even a little, it's worth it.

Yes, it is... that's why you need to get it looked at and taken care of ASAP- with any luck, you can dramatically slow down the worsening! :D

Man, by all means try to head this off before it gets worse!!! While doing some heavy pallet-pulling, I developed an irritated tendon around my heel area on my right foot, and it has caused me more difficulties than all my other ailments combined and doesn't seem to heal, only subside for a bit. It messed up my hiking and running which basically messed up everything else. If it hadn't been for Asics brand shoes, I'd probably have to go with some ornate orthotic. For some reason, Asics seems to irritate the heel area more than any brand I've yet tried. They just don't seem to make a trail shoe, or at least one that I can find locally (not a popular local brand).

Usually, ultrasounds have been pieces of cake compared to any other procedures I've had. Cold, gooey gel is the major complaint.

Good Luck, Bill.

I've had ultrasound a few times but only as a means to look at something. I was unaware that it can be used to treat problems too. That is cool.

The Verdict...

Well it seems my heel's completly buggered, as the small fluid bladder under my heel was destroyed in the accident (listen to your mother's when she says motorbikes are bad :D). So ultrasound won't work, as there's nothing left for it to work on , likewise having it broken and reset isn't really an option either as it's set ok anyway.

So I've got two option's, orthotics and/or a cortazone injection, I've gone for the orthotics for now, but will probably need the injections for later on in life ::)

Still it was a nice 17 mile ride at least, well apart the the hills :D

Oh well.  Live and learn.

I had some ultrasound treatments for a bunged up shoulder years ago, while it was a sweet sensation, they didn't work for me.By all means avoid the cortisone, the area being targeted will hurt like blazes for hours, followed by a couple-3 days of relief.I'd rather not use steroids until it's unavoidable.I hope the orthotics will work for you long enough for medical science to come up with a better treatment.

Thanks BT

Well I've heard enough horror stories to put me off courtezone for a good long while!

I'm hopping the orthotics work out, then all I need to do is fix the left side of my chest where I broke 3 ribs, fractured my sterenum, and gave myself a crap load of sub dermal scar tissue :D

I tell you one thing. A nice heavy oak or hickory cane definitely gives you a sense of security. So mundane looking but possibly the best weapon you can carry ANYWHERE.

I'm very sorry to hear about your heel, MD. The orthotics can be surprisingly helpful (I have to wear them in all my shoes-hiking boots would be torturous without them  :-[). If you get a tech who can properly fit them, they are very unobtrusive and can be comfortable. My mother used to get the injections in her feet, legs, arms and occasionally the facial area about the jaw. The biggest problem with the injections is that it takes a while for them to take effect (with her it was 1 to 2 days given the severity of the condition) and I understand they can weaken the tissues and bone about the area. Still, they did bring relief. I also took an inflammatory drug for my heel. I'll try to see what it was. I took it until I began using the orthotics. I just felt better not going the pharmaceutical direction.

Best of Luck, Bill.
