Hot off the presses, one I've wanted to do for a while. A MiniChamp XL in alox. Basically, the XL is a rare model (probably not even a production model) of the MiniChamp that adds a Golf divot tool and the old style nail file. As far as I know, it was only ever made in cellidor. I worked out the tool layout by eye using a couple of pics I found on the net. The nail nicks are accessible, but could be difficult for those with short fingernails.

From the third picture, you can see that the thickness of the XL in alox is pretty much identical to the stock MiniChamp in cellidor.

The essential part of peening alox is getting your pin head length correct. Too much and the heads won't look right, plus it could be peened in before the head forms all the way. Too little and there won't be enough to form a proper rivet. A good rule of thumb is for the pin head to be about half the diameter of the pin stock that you're using. A way I've found to work I'd to use a liner and flush cutters to get consistent lengths.

The second is patience. Don't get in a hurry. It takes quite a few (hundreds sometimes) hammer hits to get it peened in right. Start with a few center hits, then work around the pin to gradually form the head. Work both sides evenly until the side play is gone. It may take a knife or two to dial your technique in, but you'll catch on with it.

There was something beyond the green that I just had to see, but I couldn't...so I pulled out my new EDC to see it:

You might recognize this one from sometime ago when I first made it. It was formerly a Midnight Manager, but when I finished the mod above and thought about the name, I just had to do it. I took the knife apart once again, added the emergency blade and SD ruler, swapped out the SD nail file for the cleaner tip.

So now, I have the Midnight Drifter...and that has to be the coolest sounding name for a knife that I've ever heard.

Is there a special process cause I tried RIT dye and didn't get the same results. The toothpick took the pigment but the mini driver and tweezers would not...

Where did you get that material? I thought about using part of those emergency exits signs to get a pair of glow scales...

Thank you. Scales are off to powder coat black.

I tried the epoxy this morning and all good. will clamp on real scales. Hoping the epoxy does not have any reaction with the brass.
