Can't wait to see the final result James. Is that a standard 84mm scissor I see?

Yeah, from a Golfer. It's all 84mm donors on this one.
And I am planning to do an 84mm Golfer

Here it is...I overdid it on the pin that the springs rotate on...so there's a little tightness on the openers layer, mainy the can opener. Hoping after a bunch of open/closing and after oil gets in there it'll be a bit better. Otherwise everything is working.  I like the size and wanna try it as EDC instead of Sheila for a while. Though I've been using the pen a lot over the last week...so might miss that.

Also might polish wheel the tools...maybe not... not sure yet.

Went ahead and did a quick cat and coffee shot to see how well this SAK will work on the forum...

Did over peen as well on some of my builds. The trick I found was to wiggle the tool in question left and right while opening and closing...

Awesome build by the way... Reminds me of the small huntsman

I wiggled the tools and stopped hammering as soon as the play was gone..unfortunately there's no way to wiggle the spring. Pretty sure its the spring getting stuck. When I deploy the awl it's loose. Not "side to side" loose, but loose like theres no spring pressure, then if I open can opener or bottle opener and close it again, the awl is tight. So I think the spring isn't moving freely. Like it's getting stuck in a position that makes the awl loose and the can opener tight...but when I do get the can opener deployed, then the awl behaves correctly. Gonna watch it more closely next time.

Main thing I'm excited about is the nail file. Got a Wenger build coming up though that will be all these tools plus the IL phillips/wrench layer. Curious to see how they compare.

Yaknow I think I might be wrong about the sticking can opener...now the awl is behaving as normal (after a lot of open/closing).

The can opener spins fine, but if closed gently doesn't snap all the way down. It can easily be opened from this position. If I push it all the way down/closed, then it becomes hard to open.

So maybe it's binding on the liners...?

Could be the liners... Could also mean the backspring itself is the problem...

Did you use stock 2.2mm pins or had to use a larger diameter pin and bring it down to 2.2mm?

My gauge said they were between 2.23 and 2.26 after I reduced them

I think it's crowding between the scissors and can opener, when I open the scissors and then kind of press the can opener toward the scissors layer while opening, it moves easier. Could also be rubbing on the outer scale. It's totally flat but maybe I should have used one with the slight "bulge" stamped into it.

At least I know that I can use the can opener if I deploy the scissors first

Had an experience once where I was test fitting tools using an existing pin... Tools worked out fine snappin and poppin. But when it was assembled using pins that where reduced in size, I had similar problems. Can't exactly pinpoint the cause then, either it was the center pins being over peened or the pins where reduced slightly smaller than 2.2mm..

Your pins should be alright then. Maybe its just some material stuck between backspring and liner.. Just taking a wild guess here...

I think I just should have used the liner with the "relief" stamped into it. Not sure what you call it. It kind of bows out to leave room for the tools. The one I used is totally flat. For now I may try sanding the inside surface of the outside liner to kind of give the same effect.

Hoping after maybe 4 or 5 more builds I'll have this figured out better.

It is mine and it is modded does that count as my SAK mod?

Anyhow it is a Cybertool / Swisschamp hybrid. Think Cybertool with the mag glass and phillips layer added. Got it for Sir Mike in a lot.

(Image removed from quote.)

Awesome knife, fellow!! Did yoy keep the fishscaler as well? I carry a normal swisschamp and when I was tempted to change to ct 41 the loss of fishscaler and mag glass really stopped me. I ended up with an xlt haha, but your knife seems like the perfect combination!!

Junior/Special Mechanic for the Minimal SAK challenge next month:

I built one of these a while ago, and found I didn't use it (I don't like the combo tool) so took it apart.  But I'd like the option of pliers for the 2-layer max challenge, so here's another.

I'd guess that you might have a correctly sized pin, but that it got a little bend during peening. If it's still free enough to rotate slowly, whilst bent, relative to the knife scales, that might explain why 1 tool, and then the 2nd tool start having a similar problem (assuming both the tools with the problem are on the same pin).

Yesterday I received a modded Yeoman that I won in an online auction. Unfortunately, the action on almost all of the tools was sluggish and no amount of oil could fix it. The springs seemed weak and I suspected the possibility of a bent pin. I took matters into my own hands and rebuilt the whole thing using parts from a beat up Explorer. Here's the result:

Everything works great now. This was my first 91mm build and peening job, but I'm happy I bit the bullet and went for it.

It actually functions better than some factory models I've received. Sometimes I've gotten explorers where the snap on the screwdriver/mag glass layer is nonexistent (that was the case with the explorer I took apart to make this). Not sure what improved it.

Probably corrosion on the liners. If there's enough corrosion, it will keep the spring from moving freely (from a combination of friction and compression). Usually WD-40 and tooth floss  is sufficent to fix it.

Nice job on the mod :tu:
