I miss making this Phillips across from opener mods.  I just hates having to buy an explorer to get just the Phillips tool.

This not a mod, but an amateurish restoration... Helping a friend fix his Wenger SI that has a broken blade backspring...

The procedure is to replace the broken backspring without disassembling the entire SAK... just need to drill the center pin and push it out slowly with a new one... a simple but delicate procedure... and success... just need to peen it... pardon the crappy pick... my hands were shacking from excitement...

Am glad I kept all the nickle silver pins from the alox saks I took apart... I reused the center pin which came off a Pioneer X... Oh the backspring came from a Pioneer...

Again I know I have my own thread but I think this is another one people would be interested to see here (i.e. not just another spydernox  :P). This one is based on a Victorinox Vagabond with added 91mm awl, eyeglass driver from a 65mm wenger, and orange peeler from a 74mm executive.

Hi All,

Here's my steel Pioneer.  Hand made 2mm steel scales, hand made brass pivots, M2.5 torx screws.  For the next one I'm going to peen then sand solid brass pivots   :)

Two blue Wengers:
- one is an attempt at putting saw, file, Phillips and scissors in the smallest package. I'm not sure I will use it a lot, as I miss the awl. I have a feeling that a 91mm with the same toolset will be better... if only I can find a 91mm combo tool.
- the other is a S557 without the pliers (I'm not a fan of SAK pliers in general, and while I can stand the Victorinox in a pinch I actively hate the Wenger "double hinge"). This one did see a little use, but has now been superseded by my Cadet X/Super Cadet/Alox Salesman.
And blue scales for both, obviously.

Good mods  :like:
To avoid stripping a 91mm Compact, the Combo tool from the much cheaper 84mm Waiter is a good alternative. Is a little smaller and needs a reprofile on the pivot to get it to seat a little higher when closed, but works fine.
I used to think SAK pliers were a wot too, until I started carrying my SC daily. Just the other day, a parking ticket slipped down the side of my seat in the car. Just a tip of the ticket was showing down in the seat mechanism...too small a gap for my fingers. The SC pliers were perfect to extract the ticket.
I see them more as super tweezers...

Two bladeless Ramblers (one bladeless-ish because of the package opener/orange peeler) to use in public places, if they ever reopen. I decided to arrange the tools differently from the original for easier access to the nail nicks. I used titanium scales sold as a kit on Aliexpress (with matching screws), they worked as advertised. The only problem is that when the tweezer slot is empty, the spring next to it tends to move sideways inside inside it. To prevent this I decided to add an outer liner on this side, but then the tip of the screws isn't flush with the scales. I can live with this but YMMV.

All materials iI have been making SAK scales of – left to right:
brass flat
stainless
nickel silver
? material and brass
bone
? material
copper
brass rounded

? material is made from tiny wood particels in same sort of artificial resin (perhaps melamine), I don't know name of it, but handles are very pleasant to hold.

Those are some great build samek  :like:

The mixed-media one is really nice.

As a consideration, I have started to use a 'floating' fourth pin, where I only drilled half-way through the inside of the scale. This pin does not hold much tension, just retains the backsprings.

Not your typical Yeoman...

The Yeoman essentially contains all the necessary tools I need as a dad in an urban environment; the only thing missing was a functioning screwdriver to reach those stubborn screws on battery compartments on kids' toys.

I obtained parts from my trusty Compact and the vintage car front scale and technician's screwdriver from a mangled Automobile to create this beauty. In addition to the associated tools on the backside plus scale, I added a ferro rod to the toothpick slot. I purchased a short tweezer and moved it to the hidden slot in the corner. I wanted to keep the toothpick, so I shaved down the head, cut off the cap to the long tweezer, glued them together, and returned them back to the standard tweezer location on the front scale. This is about 99.9% complete...just missing the perfect front scale that is very hard to obtain.

Still needs a name...thinking of "The Dad".

That's a cool mod :dd:
I like that name too. I can imagine a dad opening a bottle of Valpolicella Ripasso after a tough day fixing kid's toys. Hence the corkscrew obviously.
