Any coin collectors out there?
on: June 21, 2015, 12:50:24 AM
The only thing I used to go after were the wheat pennies, but I lost my stash when moving a while back. But recently my wife's grandmother passed away and my wife and her used to collect, so needless to say we ended up with a pile of coins. Only one put a smile on my face which was a jar of wheat pennies, which I went through and found two which didn't belong, because they didn't have good ol Abe on the front, but an eagle.. But besides that theirs a lot of nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars, dollars, and other unique coins, heck even transit tokens, I just don't know the first thing of coins besides most are round and made of metal.. I can take pics.

those flying Eagle pennies are nice,  only made for a few years, and are fairly valuable

Very cool JR.  The Flying Eagle cent was the first American small cent.  Earlier cent coins were much larger.  1856 Flying Eagles are extremely rare, as they were pattern pieces, not meant for circulation.  The coin was only officially minted in 1857 and 1858.  There are two variations of the 1858, one with large lettering and one with much smaller.  This was because the design turned out to be very difficult to strike.  It was replaced in 1859 by the "Indian Head" cent, which doesn't officially have an Indian on it.  It's Liberty wearing an Indian headdress.

Beat me to it.  :tu: Love me some Flying Eagles and Large Cents. Any Cent really. I have a thing for pennies. I was actually recently thinking of trying to "finish" my cent collection. I will take some quick pics next time they are out.

I decided that my Lincoln Cents have been long neglected, so I got myself a few books and have started working on them again.  :tu:

Cool  I got to take all the wife's coins and sort them all out, I want all the wheats, I think I saw one of the Indian heads,,

Is their a good website that gives a good breakdown of the value of the coins? And maybe a description of key points to look for like the LARGE/small print?

decided I could not afford a 1909 S V.D.B.  so I gave up on all of them.  I do still pull wheat pennies from circulation,  maybe 4 or 5 a year.  I keep them.  I also pulled a mercury dime from circulation about a year ago. I have found in circulation a few silver dimes, and one silver quarter.   also a few WWII silver nickles.
If I can help, let me know

Not many can or are willing to drop the cash for a 1909-S VDB. No reason to give it up though buddy. Having empty spots you know you wont fill does kind of suck though.

actually, when money was tight I sold most of what I had that was of value coin wise.  now I mostly collect from circulation.  when silver is low, I will buy a few old dimes that are sold at silver price.   coinflation will show you the value of the silver content and updates daily.

Here are the Flying Eagles we are talking about. I have all three varieties. No 1856 obviously.

The 1857 and 1858 small letters where meant to be fillers, but I never replaced them with higher grade coins.

My favorite coin is probably the Flying Eagle, but I do love the Large Cents. If I got back into it I would buy more Large Cents for sure. I think the 1842 is the oldest American coin I have, but if I remember correctly the holed one might be 1820's. The 1842 is 19 years older than the Civil War! I always wanted a 1700's cent though. The USA first started minting coins in 1792 so anything in the 1700's would be very cool to own!

My multitool and knife habit kind of kicked my coin collecting habit to the curb though. I might have to give the coin collection some love.

Mad, If you want pics of most of my cent collection I will PM them to you.

Here are a few Large Cents.

Collecting from circulation is fun. Even if it is just completing a book of common coins from the last 20-30 years. Every coin can be found in circulation and it cost you nothing.  :tu:

I have a small collection of world coins. Some were picked up on trips abroad; some bought out of the till back when I was a clerk in my college days (big university town with lots of foreign students); some dug out of coin tubs at coin shops at so many per dollar. Nothing particularly valuable, but its fun to look at the different designs from around the world. Recently gave a small batch to the Pastor's kids, along with some foreign stamps accumulated while buying SAKs from overseas.

Most are not worth anything really. The proofs, 1999's and variants are what are harder to find. Do some research and see what you have. It might spark some interest in putting together a Susan B collection.  :tu:
