Leatherman Rev Fail- sort of
on: April 19, 2016, 01:15:26 PM
I just finished painting and now I'm replacing all of the switch and outlet covers.  I had the Rev handy and decided to give it a shot.  I am not a fan of the Rev, but it was there and I needed a screwdriver so therefore it was the best tool ever.  Sort of.

I first pulled out the large flathead figuring that was exactly the right size I needed.  Width wise it was perfect, but it turned out to be too broad to fit in the screw head.  D'oh!

So I folded out the smaller one on the end of the file and it fit but was far too tiny.  Luckily the screws in outlet plates don't need a lot of torque or I'd have stripped the screwdriver head or broken the file, which are usually heat treated too hard to be very good screwdrivers.

The Rev didn't actually fail, but it wasn't exactly a win either.

I think you are supposed to put the knife blade/s in the socket, both slots if possible and then turn the tool.....

If I ever find myself needing to use the Rev again I might just do that....  ::)

I just hope LM doesn't make it a trend in making tools like this :( The Rev has never interested me and it sure doesn't now :D

I wasn't a huge fan of the Sidekick and Wingman, but I am a huge SK/WM enthusiast compared to how I feel about the Rev.

I was surprised how much I liked the Wingman but it was because it was fairly feature dense for what it is. The Rev on the other hand isn't very feature dense for the money and lower quality. That's just my opinion though ;) I guess if I had one in hand I might be able to make a better judgement call but unless they go really really cheap somewhere that probably won't happen ::) :D

I never liked how they did the flatheads on the Sidekick series. I am a big fan of that Philips driver though.

I picked a Rev at a orange home store, for around 19 bills.  If I paid full retail, it would have been return, maybe why the discontinued price point.
It does the very basics, yet I would not rely on as a daily tool for work.  IMHO

That kind of price might tempt me  I would have to be in a buying mood though  :D

I've had the same issue with the same screwdrivers on the Sidekick.  I can live with the small one, but the larger one makes very little sense to me.

They got lazy naming this tool too.  Sidekick, Wingman, then Rev

I suppose it's because Leatherman Co-Worker doesn't have the same ring to it.

Maybe the yshould have gone with "Leatherman Chum" instead

I have put off with acquiring the trio Wingman - Sidekick - Rev (W-S-R) for a while, as they are perceived as "low grade". This thread and Chako's review of the W - S thread, which exposes the wide handle spread, convince me to put off with acquiring them for a longer while yet. This forum is not full of enablers after all  :D

The Rev was my first LM, I used it quite a bit with no problems.

To be fair to my Sidekick the large flat is the only tool I really don't like.  While it's hardly a flawless MT I think most of the other tools do, at least, an OK job. :)

This is why I pretty much stopped buying new tools.  I have a Rebar, Blast, Sideclip (not sidekick), and PST.  I use them all, and they work extremely well.  Leatherman will have to work pretty hard to come out with something I like more than those 4 tools.  I tried the Wingman/sidekick/rev line and found it to be cheap and not very well thought out.  Felt like a gimmick more than a tool.

I really don't like the Rev's design at all. I don't get what LM was thinking with this one  ???
