There also seems to be an idea floating around of pinching the handles near the base of the knife blade to make it a fixed blade.

I don't think I'd do it but... anyone heard of this or wanna test it out for me? :D

I am selling mine.  Enough said.  :D

I have heard about people making it a fixed blade as well.  Would be very simple to do.

I got to play with Ben's, and I've got to say I wasn't too impressed :(, and Opinel's a much better knife imo :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I have 4 Douk-Douks; one large, one medium and two large Squirrels. They take a very scary sharp edge easily, respond well to stroping on cardboard and disappear in a pocket. IMHO they are easier / more comfortable to carry than an Opinel, but the Opinels are more comfortable to use for a lot of cutting tasks. I find that the Douks tolerate the humidity down here (South Louisiana) better than Opinels do. I keep a No.8 Inox in my desk as a fruit knife, and some days it can be pretty stiff to open.

I know this is an old thread, but I didn't see the need to start another one. I've yet to buy a Douk-Douk, but I will soon. These look great for a cheap legal self defense knife and they might work ok for utility cutting tasks as well.  :tu:

Hey frog, did you ever buy one?  :D

Here is a cool video on the Douk-Douk:

Yeah, I bought it in two sizes: medium and large (the middle two in the original image). It's nice how slim it is but the lack of a nail nick is a killer for me. I prefer my K55. :tu:

Just say the word.

I have a couple of which I got from Lee Valley Tools.

http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx?c=1&p=55171&cat=1,51222

They are cheap, sharp, a good utility knife to stow away in a picnic basket or a
glove box maybe?  Like most steel handled knives you have to be careful with it
with respect to grip.  You also want to make sure your digits are all out of the
way when you close it the last bit because it does have some snap to that
backspring.  :)
If budget is your concern it's a nice knife although I think I would opt for the
Opinel instead.

I've got a medium Douk Douk (third one down in that pic).  Great knife, I prefer it over my K55 :D.

I carry it in my EDC bag and use it for food.  It's got a nice blade shape :tu:

I agree the blade shape is much better, but it's kinda hard to deploy and I don't like the unfinished feel. I'm thinking about carrying an Opinel for foodstuffs, though.

I just read the name and shudder.  :D  I have one and to be quite blunt, I think it's bloody awful.  For the money I could name a load of things (in fact anything at that price  :D) that I'd rather have.

Mine does serve a purpose though.  :tu:  I keep it as a reminder to not impulse buy as that was one of the first impulse buys in the tooly field that I made and I sure regretted that one!

Ben, what I like about them is the fact that they're cheap carbon steel blades that can be used for utility or self defense. I can just throw one in my back pocket and when I have a nasty cutting task I can use the Douk-Douk and not worry about messing up a good knife. The upside is they're UK legal if under 3" but you already knew that!  :D

I don't see the appeal; particularly after looking up the cost. Ya, so its decently cheap. So is an alox SAK Soldier! Hell, wanna go cheaper than a SAK? How about a good ol' fashioned Case Sodbuster jr. Or even cheaper, a Rough Rider Sodbuster.
