They should be more rusty if they are the backup set and hardly used

Great to see you back!  Don't let that real life stuff get in the way too much- when it's over, it's over, but your forum posts will be around forever!

And as for not liking the new forum look, well, judging by all of the other curmudgeons, no one does either.  :P

Remembered I gave my tent away last year, so looking round for something to sleep in at the meet, I have decided to try out my Zeltbahn. I have two of them that make up two ponchos or button together to make a tent. They come in a bag with poles, guys and pegs so I'll give it a go.
It's going to be pretty basic so I'm praying for warm, dry weather.

I don't have a bivi, but I am going to use a rubberised British poncho as a ground sheet and will bring either 3 NATO sleeping mats or a blow up mattress and sleeping bag.

Plus the nearest B&B is a 40 (ish) minute walk away, assuming drinking, along one of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians in the area.

Oh and it's £95/per night

Yeah dks, is that what you want? Me run over and £95 out of pocket?  :pok:

I'll kip in my trusty Zeltbahn and try not to dream of Sparky and his rusty chisel nudie dance.  :ahhh Hmmm, thinks: That doesn't sound much better than being run over and £95 out of pocket.

Thanks Tony - I could bring a tent if I wanted, but I really want to try the Zeltbahn out.  I've had it a few years so it's time to put it to work. It will be character building.

Check out Papa Hiker on youtube.  He has some great tarp setups.  I think with the right configuration your going to be fine.  What a great adventure to use the Zeltbahn  :salute:.

For those youngsters here who have not been in the army, these two part tents are really not that brilliant.

You first need to find someone else, with the other half, so as to have a complete tent (so, if it is 11 of you, you will have a problem.

Then, there is no floor, so you need to dig a ditch (or pile some earth) around the tent, so any running rain water will not flow into the tent. This of course does not stop the various animals/insects from wandering in, from under your tent.  Even if you put plastic sheets on the ground you can not seal the tent.

In addition to that, they tend to be very short, so if you are over 6 feet, your head/feet will stick out of the tent.

During the night, if you touch any of the two supporting poles (and you will, as the space is minimal) the tent will fall on you.

Because of the material they are made from, basically fabric, they are not really waterproof, and if you touch the roof, whilst it is raining, the water will start coming in from that point. you can cover it with nylon, but the water will find a way to come in.

Now, since there is no floor, your weight can not be used to support the tent when it is windy, so it may fly away.

My suggestion is to also take a small, modern tent (something light) as a backup, in case the excitement wears off realy quickly [/li][/list]

Seriously though, those are good a valid points.  :salute:  I'd still be happy to give one a go but keep the limitations in mind.

Just sleep in the zeltbahn.  It's only a couple of nights, in a field, in the UK, in summer.  You won't die. :pok:

I used a tarp and bivvy bag last year, and Gareth did the year before.  I'll probably use mine this year too.

Thanks for your concerns dks - you obviously speak from experience and I will take on board what you've said.

I have two halves so can make a whole tent, and am only staying the one night - I can endure anything for one night  :D . If it rains I'll kip in my car, but Sparky has promised us good camping weather so I'm going with that. He would never lie to us.

I am considerably less than 6ft tall, so will fit in the tent fine (especially as I'll probably be curled up in the fetal position after watching Sparky's nudie rusty chisel dance).

This is the perfect time to test it because no matter how hard I try, my wife and daughter don't seem at all interested in spending the night under the stars in a dodgy length of insubstantial material.

Thanks again for your concern. Maybe it would put your mind at rest if you gave me your phone number and if I'm scared/wet/trapped in sopping canvas, I can ring you for help.  :D

After all those warnings? You were trying to sucker me into asking for your company. Well I call your bluff! You are cordially invited to share my Zeltbahn for the UK meet. I shall be heartbroken if you don't turn up (and probably horrified if you do  :D ). Large spoon or small spoon?
