Unfortunately as soon as I thought about  testing it, the rain stopped and they re-instated a county wide burn ban!  From everything I've read, they work great!

I have a fold flat Emberlite stove that needs testing too!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

A great plan!!!  People (me included) around here are skittish when they smell smoke...heck, we had a Wildfire break out yesterday (in an adjacent county) from a lightning strike then the thunderstorm moved and dumped a bunch of rain....in another spot.

I might could sneak a test in if we get some rain but it may be spring before I can do a proper test.   :salute:

Its all your fault SG.   :pok:      :D      I just ordered a R Murphy Skinner. Its not really your fault as I've wanted to try a Grohmann for many year but just couldnt pull the trigger on one. So decided to try the cheaper R Murphy Skinner out first.    :D

That's great David!!!!!     It's a great knife that holds an excellent edge. Perfect intro to the elliptical blade and handle shape. I think lots of folks that want a Grohmann (esp. in carbon) try them first and end up keeping it. One more thing, it was priced reasonably enough ($36.00 - 3 years ago) for me to not feel bad using it...

R Murphy has a rich history as the supplier to Herters. I like some of their vintage designs too...they have a 1940's feel to them!  :salute:

Having carbon steel blade was another big plus for me. I found one for 32.29 on amazon. I'm kind of excited to try it out.   :)   I like the look of your Grohmann #4 Survival. If I like the skinner I may give one of those a try. My problem in the past was I was sure I would like the handle blade angle. As I have never had the opportunity to hold one in the past.   :)

I was pawing this RC-3 and noticed the edge was tarnished after being left to rot for all those years. Good excuse to play with some of the toys in the toolbox there....

Very nice pic Dave

Just been messing around with this and have come to the conclusion that I don't need it :)

Reckon anyone would be interested in trading something for it?

That's cool and it was a great price!  I agree with what a guy (that puts in tons of woods time every year) over on BF said about the #4, He said it was the most underrated woods knife ever. As I said, the grip on it is better fit for me than the #1.

Here is the complete pic of the Grohmanns showing the spare sheath I bought for the #4!

The #4 is o the re-shoot list since I have a better camera.  :tu:

SG I was on the Grohmann knife site. You can get the GR4 with different options. Carbon or stainless blade. Saber or flat ground blade. Four different handle materials. Several sheath options.     :)

My #4 is carbon, saber ground, rosewood and it came in that nice std hunter style sheath shown on the site. I just always wanted a flap sheath.  :D

The #1 is flat ground and it's cool but the saber grind has the traditional belt knife look. That #4 looks good with a flat grind!

The carbon they use is like the equivalent to 1080. The stainless, I don't know...like 440A maybe. I've read lots of complaints comments on it's edge holding ability but then it's designed for the wetter climes of Canadian hunting/camping/fishing and easy maintenance was a consideration. Would probably be fine but since you own Beckers etc, the carbon will be closer to your expectations IMO.

Added:  The stag is awesome and would make for a true heirloom knife. I've seen some examples online and they are beautiful.

Good call David! Wise to play with the Murphy a bit and make sure you like the whole belt knife concept! And everything you like about the Murphy will be even cooler on the original....at least that's how it went for me.   :D

They all come with these handles (except the mini ones like the 15) it looks like he swapped out for micarta on his 5s. People make really beautiful wood handles for these as well
