It's been just over four years since Travis passed away and his presence is still being felt in a lot of ways.  For those of you who don't know, Travis was the man who designed the MTO logo we all know and love, and was instrumental in making the site what it is today.  But, that has all been covered before- I want to show you something else, something that I haven't posted about in a while.

In addition to his regular job, Travis ran a side business doing promotional merchandise, and is a large part of how we got to know each other in the first place.  He started the Knife Of The Year program way back in the Secret Order of Swiss Army Knives even before I took over as the Grand Toolmaster (aka moderator) of the SOSAK subforum at Knifeforums.

Travis always included a little bonus with every package I got from him, and in one package there were a couple of these small tape measures.  Since I use a tape measure at work an awful lot I decided to slap a Nite Ize e-Clipse on it and it lived in the pocket of my work vest for many years.

As you can see, it has seen a lot of mileage in it's day, in all manner of terrible conditions.  In fact, it's in exceptional condition considering the Wingman lived in my vest for only a few months (versus the years this little tape measure was there) and look what happened to it

This little tape measure hasn't gotten out unscathed though.  There used to be a small LED light in it, but repeated use and exposure to sea water has caused the cap to come off, the batteries to get lost and all the metal parts rust and corrode.

As you can see, the tape itself hasn't fared well either, but is still quite functional.  I still use it at work, and it reminds me of a good friend every time it comes out of my pocket.  Maybe I should be more careful with it and retire it, but I have lots of things to remember him by, and I like being reminded of him at random intervals.

Anyone else EDC a tape measure?  If so, I'd love to see them!

I don't EDC a tape measure, but I seem to have one within arm's reach at all times. Nothing special like that, though.   :salute:

Other than this one that I clip to my vest, most tape measures evaporate as soon as I put them down somewhere.  I rarely manage to start and finish a job with the same tape measure, and as a result, I have quite a few of them.  Unless I need one in which case I don't have any.

Here's an old Lufkin made for advertising. Small enough to fit into the coin/pocket watch pocket. I figure it's 60's or 70's based on the "crushed ice" texture and the general design shape of the thing. That and it is only scaled with inches. Oh, and Fall River has been in a "new" different area code for like 25 years. And Edward's no longer exists.

No great story behind it, at least not for me. I got it in an old model 6510 Craftsman toolbox I bought cheap at a yard sale.

Grant,
That is a fine tribute to your friend.

Measuring tapes? You'll never see me without, at least, a 6'+ measuring tape. My off days, I generally carry a 6' or 8' vintage or "nifty" measuring tape.
At work, a measuring tape is a MUST. On work days, I always have a 12' Stanley on me(and quick access to 35' tapes in my work room at the store). The journey for the "perfect" EDC tape for work carry saw several 12' Stanley models. I have settled on the Chrome plated metal-cased version they still produce. That began with a 10' Stanley I carried when I worked in NYC. It got kind of shoddy and I felt I needed to replace it. A friend gave me a "no-name" Taiwan 12' tape and I used it for a long time, but the cheap feel of it made me long for something better. After trying a few tapes out, I decided on the Stanley Lever-Lock model and bought multiples (as I do with most stuff I EDC..haha). After a few months, I got tired of having to use the lever to retract the tape everytime. I then bought their budget 12' yellow-plastic model and really liked it. The only things that drove me nuts were; the groove where the two halves come together would catch on stuff and the clip screw stripped out the plastic riser inside. After some more reading and what-not, I decided to try the metal-case chrome-plated premium 12' Stanley tape. I fell in love and have used one of the two I bought for about six months now. It is a bit heavier than the plastic case models, but I have dropped it a dozen times and it has held up perfectly. The tape pulls out, locks, unlocks, and retracts perfectly. Better than any other measuring tape I've ever owned.

My off day carry includes small pocket-friendly tapes, like the Lufkin Executive, Master mid-century chrome, Lufkin Wizard, MOMA modern-art tape, Zippo tapes, etc, etc. I pick an off-day measuring tape based on my mood for the day or style/color scheme of my EDC. :o

I have a few older wooden/aluminum folding measures, but I don't use them. Along the way, I managed to pick up, at yard sales, flea markets, a couple of electronic measures. One is a rolling measure that you hold on the surface you're measuring. The Craftsman is a sonar measuring device. It says something about lasers, but only the guide beam is laser light. The measuring is done sonically by little chirps bouncing off of the surface of what you need to know how far it is. Neither work very well, but it is what it is. Kind of a 'neat factor'. :ahhh
In my shop, I have the obligatory 'free harbor freight' assorted brand 16'/25' tapes, and other miscellaneous tapes. There is one Stanley 50' roll-up tape I use occasionally when the beed arises.

Anyway, I won't ramble any further. And hopefully Travis will have a smile seeing these tapes. I never knew him, but anyone who has made MT.o part of their lives, has to be a decent guy in my book. :)

That's a lot of cool tape measures!

I have probably 7 or 8 overall, many strategically placed around the house to ensure that I never have one handy when I need it.
