What have I missed? (tool options)
on: August 26, 2018, 01:03:22 AM
I hate to do this, but my leisure time is less than it once was, and I am no longer all over all the new releases in the market, and my limited computer equipment at the moment makes research a painfully tedious process -

I'm after a new tool, roughly with the same capability as LM Skeletool, but since I broke one of those- something a little more heavy duty.

Is there anything interesting on the market that has a decent outside opening knife, and reliable pliers? (preferably not carbide cutters, because I seem to shatter those a lot)

It will get used every day in a workplace setting, so quality and ease of use is key. Pocket clip would also be nice.

scissors, screwdrivers, files etc are "nice to haves", but not overly fussed.

(Gut feel: LM Wave is still the best all-rounder going - but please, if anything that really nails it has come out in the last two years, please let me know!)

Thanks for your patience, hopefully y'all don't mind sharing your wisdom too much  :P

There is the Havalon Evolve, which has the same form factor as the Skeletool, with blunt tip pliers, a 1/4 driver, gut hook and exchanger for Havalon blades (can take either a scalpel blade or saw), but quality is really iffy on that one, and it's expensive--like $70.

That was the first MT that I thought of. I was even thinking of getting it to review it. For $70, and being a known brand, I am disappointed to learn that it is not good quality.  :(

Maybe a cheapie? https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,72267.msg1500226.html#msg1500226
or even https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,77845.0.html .

I would not recommend the Roxon Storm, as it is quite heavy.
The Outu though, that sounds like it'll do. Decent outside blade, pliers, big scissors, pocketclip, and it's light. And it's inexpensive.

I'd go with either a LM Wave (I have one and know they are good :tu: ) or the Gerber Center Drive (I don't have one but have heard great things from them  )

Great to see you SM :tu: and good luck with the tool search :like:

I say LM Wave all the way. The new Wave +’s with replaceable wire cutters have exceptional quality control.

Not trying to sway you, but here are some things that I like about it:
-Outside opening/locking PE blade, CE blade file and saw (blade edge is on the bottom of the tool)
-Bit driver for loads of versatility
-Strong pliers, good design
-Ability to take pocket clip
-Diamond file

It has a wide tool set in a small package, is a favorite among many, and is strong enough for most reasonable tasks.

Good luck on your search  :salute: :tu:

In all seriousness: LM Signal.

Doesn't have the slimmed down plier head of the Wave +.
It's slimmer in the pocket and comes with a pocket clip.

Pliers are comfortable as all heck, best bottle opener etc etc.
Sweet colour options, green topo, coyote, black...

Going to second this. It has most of what you asked for. Plus, it comes with a hammer. That means they want you to bang it around, right?  :twak: :multi:

Thanks for all the ideas,

I think I'm going to go for a Gerber Centredrive,

for whatever mysterious reasons of our weird island economy, it's the most reasonably priced of likely "brand name" options, and it should fit the bill (more or less) as a daily work carry.

I get the feeling that nothing has really "dethroned" the LM Wave (all the Vic Spirit Carriers can cry into their soup) as a fantastic "go-to" multi, but I'm not terribly interested in coughing up the coin for another one, and I'm not near anywhere that is likely to have a you-beaut sale on them any time soon.
