I have continued to be fascinated by the variety of traditional knives shared in this thread so far and suspect even more so SS we continue.

BUT,  What makes the GEC knives so special and popular?

More so than the CASE models?

To be honest, I never heard of GEC till I read of them on MTo.  Same for Bear and Son.  Maybe I lead sheltered life!!!

I may have to come out of retirement just to tickle this new ITCH

Thanks.  My Dad’s was black, shaped like the Yellow Case, but had a shield like I have seen on Camillus knifes. I believe it was lost after he was hospitalized before he passed away.

Day 13. Had to cut out a tree root, and my handsaws weren't cutting it, and I was a bit nervous with kick where I was cutting into the ground, so out comes the Dewalt 18V reciprocating saw and the long Bosch pruning blade.

Day: 13

Chicken dinner tonight!

As some of you already know, I try to use my challenge tool to break down a chicken for supper at some point during every challenge. Today gave me that chance once again....

The Sodbuster was razor sharp and made nice long, clean cuts. That belly up near the tip is great for slicing. The tip was used to feel along the backbone--tonight's chicken got spatchcocked for the grill. Backbone, scapulae, wishbone, and ribs got removed. The Sodbuster did a great job, although at one point I did something awkward that resulted in the knife starting to close.  "Oh, no, not a Matt-move!"  flashed through my head, and I stopped short of actually closing the knife on my hand.

The Mudbug's lock does look a little more tempting, now......  ;)

Chicken ready for the grill:

So, the Sodbuster doesn't match the Buck 110 for power and ease of use, but it did very well. I wouldn't hesitate to use it again for this task!  :tu:

For those interested in what happened to the chicken:

Show content

Chicken given a rub of olive oil, hawaij, more pepper, thyme, and salt:

About 40 minutes on the grill, indirect heat:

Mrs Nix was happy with the chicken: "This issooooo good." I was happy with the Sodbuster (which was cleaned thoroughly and then stropped. No edge issues.)  :tu: .

According to someone from GEC, the black isn't die but natural part of the bone. Read that somewhere on the BF.

I really don't believe that myself.

You might be right, I remembered it wrong. Found the quote and it's about texture not color  :dunno:

Day 14

GEC#61 with a Artisan coutelier maurice dubost Opinel-style knife.

I've read that earlier offering from GEC tends to have stronger pull, but sure am glad to find this one has the pull that I like, just a tad bit stronger than a SAK.  I got the Artisan Coutelier knife from evil bay, but my googlefu couldn't find more details for me.  I think Opinel does have collaboration with different makers/organization over the years, and this one maybe the one of those collab.  Most of the Opinel I owned usually have very stiff joint, but this one is super smooth.

Craftsman helped in opening the whiskey for my nightcap.  I can never grab the pull tab with my fingers, so I got in the habit of using my knife on it.

Ohhh... I get you, because it's all mixed together right?

When the pasta's almost al dente, I drain it put it back in the pan with some of the bolognese and cook it for a minute, then plate it with some grated parmesan, black pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice.  :tu:

Ya ya... I'll have some beans for breakfast...
