My WIP attempt at a thick(er) 84mm mod
on: March 12, 2023, 02:23:56 PM
I signed onto MTO after a long absence, and saw jaya_man's Jalox Jr made by Simyo. I've seen it before and appreciated it, who wouldn't like such a masterpiece?
This time though, it bit me. Now I neeeeeed a 84mm SAK :D

Inline philips is a must, obviously. It's also the biggest issue to tackle with this mod.
I'd need the 85mm wenger version to go the Syph patented "2-in-1" opener layer route, which means getting ahold of a rare and expensive wenger SAK.... Must be damaged, I cannot bring myself to feck up one that is in good condition, that would be a crime, right?
So anyway, I have a lead on one from Germany, we'll see if it pans out. If not, and there's no others...
Additionally will need two 84mm backtool-less opener springs, so that means getting two recruits or something.
Actually, need to check if I can have the awl on one of them.

Alternatively, since I DO like the magnifying glass rather much, another option is follow in Scibeer's footsteps: Scibeer's 84mm Madness! -SOSAK archives august 2007
It's a... lot of work. And requires skills greater than my own. But what's the worst that could happen? >:D But yeah, still...

There's also the scissors, lots of work needed, but it's well documented.
BUT! how to keep everyone's favorite tool, the hook? Will have to check on that.
Either way, will need 91mm scissors and two 91mm scissor springs as per How to build a modern Golfer (84mm cellidor) - Syph007

Then can't forget the actual base knife ( alox Cadet, celidor tourist or sportsman?)

TBC... In the donor and info finding stage, will take a while.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I bet it isnt easy to find damged wengers with inline phillips, i have one but i have no heart to tear it up since only real damge is on scales.
Also Wenger has that flat phillips screwdriver what is really slim if dont wanna go with thicker phillips. By looking those mods both ox them are actually brilliant idea, i wish i had skill to do that kind mods myself.

I know right? It's impossible to tear up these lovely discontinued wengers unless they're smurfed.

This is the flat screwdriver you're talking about, right? Pretty cool! Didn't know about it.

Thank you. :salute: Modding and the community, that's what keeps pulling me back. :D :salute:

Just leaving this here, ComboTool's 91mm Victorinox Ranger with dual inline Phillips . Food for thought. The 111mm inline phillips might be too long to fit in a 84mm SAK, but it seems well worth mentioning anyway because it is AWESOME. :o

Small addendum, https://forum.multitool.org/index.php?topic=87675.0 suggests that the new 91mm scissors spring can be adapted to 84mm in much the same way as the old style pre-hook spring. Perhaps I'll have my lovely hook on this 84mm mod. :dd:
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

If you want a Phillips opposite a magnifying glass there may be a simpler solution to explore: use a recent (shorter) Phillips with an older (grey) magnifier. I haven't tested it yet but it looks like it should just fit in a 84mm mod. This way you don't have to redrill the Phillips (but of course you would have to sacrifice two Explorers).

Thank you very much, I'll keep that in mind because I already have a grey magnifier, so I'd just need to buy one explorer. :)

Just trying to sus out the plan of attack and lay out the options I can take for the phillips layer. :D
Decided to replicate the toolset of my 91mm favorite modded SAK, so I don't agonize as much over what tools to pick for this 84mm mod.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

Might go fully urban on this one, actually. :D
-Ditch the woodsaw, so just metal file with backside fine screwdriver.
-Mag glass, because that's very urban.

Simpler! Also gets rid of one required donor SAK, an 84mm with woodsaw, and one potentially required donor SAK, 111mm with long inline phillips.

Update:

Used Wenger Matterhorn is on the way.... I'll take off the in-line phillips layer, and swap in a fresh main blade from a two layer Wenger.
With that done, I'll have one option for in-line phillips for the mod, and a renewed Matterhorn without an in-line phillips layer to pass on or carry.

Additionally bought a very fresh Ranger...
Will take off the stainless steel file and rebuild it as a huntsman-with-a-chisel to give to my sister who wants a SAK with saw. :tu:

Still need to sort out scissors donor and the 84mm SAKs I need for parts and to build upon.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

:like: This is going to be great Don Pablo! When its done you should take a group photo with all the donor/sub mods that are used and created.

Hang on, what carbide drill bits does everyone prefer? I need to pick some. :ahhh
Hopefully at worst I can use my own bit and gain access to a workshop late next month.
I heard something about step bits being nice?

Alternatively I could get a diamond bit for dremel? ???

Diamond bits work good with a Dremel but be careful not to burn your Dremel up :ahhh

Hope you can find some bits that work well for you and good luck, Pabs :salute: :like:

Hopefully I'll find out what kind of reasonably priced carbide bits I can use with a drill press, but if it comes to it I'll keep the diamond bits in mind.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

This took a backseat due to the amount of time it's taking to get all the parts + exams.

Always best to have some kind of schedule (even of it is a longer one ;) ) to keep one honest and hopefully it will keep pushing you to finish  :salute: :like:
