An interesting 84mm mod
on: November 25, 2019, 04:25:36 PM
I was informed that a package was waiting for me at home... Finished all of todays task in a hurry and sped home. Kinda like a kid waiting for Santa to bring presents

I thought what could this care package be and from who? It turns out it was from @simyo... An 84mm mod I call an Urban Cadet...

I remembered telling Tim in one of our discussions (normal chat and exchanging if ideas) about a challenging mod theory I’ve set on doing myself (down to the detailed blue print) and was in the process of hunting for the parts needed ... just needed an 84mm scissors layer and an inline phillips from a Wenger or Vic Delemont series to put my plan into action.

Didn’t realize Simyo secretly took the challenge upon himself and built this... Simyo even remebered I loooove Black Alox... and Now Jalox has a little brother (Jalox Jr.)...

The plan of attack is similar to Syph’s 2in1 layer... Need 2 opener backsprings... placing the bottle opener next to the can opener... some tweeking needs to be done on the backspring for the bottle opener to sit just right...

Then place the inline phillips (wenger / vic delemont) has just the right size for this plan to work... again, some grinding/filing needs to be done to either the Pivot or the backsprings... and then add spacers to the left and right side... ensuring that the phillips doesn’t hit the front scale...

Don’t know exactly for sure how you did it Simyo... But you did good on the assault... again, I thank you...

Sometime in the future I will definitely have a go at it too in order to put my curiosity to rest... For now, I will enjoy this special gift from you...

Christmas came early this year... :woohoo:

Thank you everyone, it was all Jaya’s idea, I just happened to have the parts to make it happen and it was too good of an idea not to try.  On a side note it might be easier than creating an urban pioneer.  It has been an agonizing month or so not being able to share this creation in public but the reveal was totally worth it.

One of the best 84mm mods I've seen.  So close to perfection for me that my 84mm Golfer and Wenger Cyclist are both scared.

An interesting 84mm mod
Reply #19 on: December 02, 2019, 01:08:51 PM
Just an update... and edc evaluation...

I’ve been carrying Jalox Jr. for 7 days straight... All the while, its bigger brother has been on R&R while on standby...

I’m impressed with this baby... weighing in at 100grams and its no thicker than a 91mm Compact... It’s bigger brother weighs in at 130grams and is no thicker than a 91mm Yeoman...

For the first time, I think I have a SAK that is worthy of Jalox... I haven’t been contented with other backups I have (Cadet II X mod to name one)... I have used all the tools except for the can opener... but it will get used some day... all tools are very much as capable as its big brother taking size into consideration...

So going forward, I will have 2 saks in edc rotation... Jalox as my go to and Jalox Jr. as main backup...

Here’s some latest pics...

I recently tweaked it a bit to make my carry experience even better... Replaced the liners with brass ones... also filed the bottom part of the inline phillips pivot (the side that makes contact with the backspring) almost flat so that the phillips head will sit lower...

On mod aspect in general, for those wanting to try out a 2in1 layer on an 84mm frame, I think the wenger/vic delemont phillips is more suitable without doing too much work to sit it properly...

Jalox Jr. has rendered my Cadet II X mod useless... I will now have to convert it to include an inline phillips...

That is really awesome.

What are the back springs in the 2-in-1 layer?  Two opener layer springs?

Yes. 2 opener backsprings... One was modified a bit so that the bottle opener can sit as low as the can opener...

Some additional info...

0.65mm washers/spacers are needed on the left and right side of the inline phillips in order to compensate for the thickness of the 2 openers...
