I finally broke down and got two Opinel folders a No.8 and the No.10 “wine and cheese” knife! I can see why you like them! Their quality has improved over the years, and their price quite reasonable!!!

Opinels are one of my favorites and, in fact, Multitool.org was almost Opinel.org, a site dedicated to collectors and customized of these beautiful French knives!

I hadn’t tried an Opinel until this forum and now have a couple. 

I really like them.

The price is very reasonable for the quality and it is just such a simple design that works.

The Picnic+ Cutlery set is a nice addition too.

Though I have used either (stainless or carbon steel) hard enough to make a serious judgment. I must say in carbon steel’s defence, it that it has encountered things with a bit of moisture in them and it hasn’t pitted or rusted yet. It’s very forgiving for carbon steel.
FYI ! Though the No.7 is a smidge smaller than the No.8 and the 8 is pocket friendly. The tiny bit of difference on the 7 makes it WAY more friendly in the pocket😃👍

Grant‼️to answer your question about Opinel’s carbone steel. I now have a bit of darkening in the carbon steel! No pitting/ rusting but a general darkening. What happened was that the No.8 was used to cut up some baked potatoes slathered in “Bowel & Baket( generic ShopRite brand) bbq sauce.

This is true, but I have always been more interested in how well a blade functions (ie cutting) than I was in how they look.  I like the patina that these types of tools develop.

I have been sucked in by a nice looking knife, just as much as the next guy, but I have a lot of respect for a tool that does it's job and has the marks to prove it.  Patina is something those funky looking gas station knives will never have!

I wish Opinel made their smaller knives with the same locking system.  I really want a No. 4 with the locking ring! 

at this point I would be happy with a cheap company making a knock-off version.

I don't think they were any smaller, ,but Cold Steel did rip off the design with their Twist Master series, but I think they are long since discontinued now.

Had to cut a damaged awning off the top of my camper this morning. I had already sent all my tools back down (and I didn't want to go back to get them or have the wife throw them up), so I reached in to see what was in my pocket.
