Day 6

The fireworks wackos made noises again last night.  How joyful.  Carried the No.9 yellow thing to W-Mart yestiddy.  The extra weight in noticable in the hand, but still very, very light.  Less than 3 ounces.  Opinel says it weighs 2 ounces, which can't be right.  Other sources say 2.8 ounces.
I noticed there is one US source that sells the Neo version Opinel.  That's the one with a detent sort of lock.  Only comes in premium woods.  This site sells the olive wood version for $35.  There are also black walnut and ebony.  Opinel has chosen to make the tip rounded for some reason.
The French site lists the Neo.  Opinel's US site doesn't list the Neo for sale.  I don't know if the vendor selling these is legit or not.  Starts with a K.  The US Opinel site keeps low stocks of some items which is a mystery to me.  They only have 7 knives for the No.9 DIY.  Gray and yellow together.
It is humid here most of the time.  The plastic handle is a real treat after struggling with a wood Opi.  Best wishes.  G

I like that color Gary!  I agree with you on Opinel USA.  It seems like they go through their inventory pretty quickly.

Oh, I do like that yella Opinel, Gary.  Id wind up losing the bit though.  Guaranteed.

I got out my no.6, that I picked up in the mountains back in March.   Did a little light sanding on the handle to remove some of the end design and added a light walnut stain,  finished it off with a gloss lacquer and a forced patina on the blade.

Looks like you have everything except the Bat-a-rang and the Bat Shark Repellent.  When I was a sprout the campy Batman series was on TV.  The five and dime stores had Batman kits.  Every new TV series had packs of cards and a stick of rock hard gum inside.  Cost a nickel.  The Batman kit was similar but came in a cardboard box that was about 3 by 5 inches.  Open it up and you got a few Bat cards and some gum.  Some little plastic doodad like a whistle or something.  The box was made so you could fit several of them on your belt and make your own Batman utility belt.  I only bought a Bat box one time.  Not much stuff for the money.  And I had no intention of carrying a bunch of boxes on my belt.
Best Bat wishes.
Gary

Never saw the Neo Opinel before. Not sure how I feel about the detent lock. The ring is a big part of what makes the Opis unique.

I forgot to do a quote again yesterday, so here's a little background on Nessmuk's axe. He says that an axe from the store would cost about $2. He says his daily wages are about $1.25. The total cost of the axe (including lost wages) is $12.75. With inflation (did you know there was almost no inflation until the mid 20th century? I learned something!) that comes out to about $420, puts his daily wage around $40 a day, and the cost of an axe near $65. Axes haven't changed in price too much. Nessmuk's pretty underpaid if you ask me.

We did a cookout at my father in law's campsite. He built himself a nice little outdoor bathroom attached to the side of his deck, and I opened a new roll of paper towels.

And I cut the lid off this strawberry short cake to split with my wife, just easier to eat that way.

And for today's quote:

Quote
Take it easy, and always keep cool. Nine men out of ten, on finding themselves lost in the woods, fly into a panic, and quarrel with the compass. Never do that. The compass is always right, or nearly so.

Don't panic!

@PitCarver - That's a good looking Opinel.  :tu:

Work let me out of my cage for a bit today so I ran some errands.  This was my carry today.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Day 7 - these are my notebooks that I use pretty much everyday. Field notes in a recycled firefighter cover for all kind of notes, the small one are my wallet and has a tiny notebook for those times when my field notes are out of reach and last but not least are my a5 notebook where I keep track of training and like longterm memory, stuff around the house etc.

Day 7

Still going with the Opinel No.9.  About the two bits stored in the handle.... so far I haven't had one come loose from its moorings.  I figure if one does come off, it will likely be in my pocket.  I have plenty of quarter inch bits anyway, and someone could always put a piece of black tape over the handle to hold the bits in.  The bits in mine are really tight.
I like the shape of the blade.  It is shorter than the usual No.9 and the portion where the wire strippers are isn't sharpened.  I left some macaroni for the vermin last night.  Even though they don't help with the yard work like the deer.  At least not in a positive manner.  They did dig up my daffodil bulbs looking for grubs.  Once they start that, there is no end.  If I replant the bulbs, they see where the ground has been disturbed and dig it up again.  Then later that night, another fur-bearer comes along and sees the excavation.  Thinking this must be good grub hunting territory, it makes an even bigger hole.  And so it goes.
Life in the slow lane.  Don't it make you want to lose your mind.
Best wishes.  G

Day 7

My favorite flashlight. Emisar D4V2 solid copper with 1850K emitters. Very warm light, similar to an Edison bulb. Ramps from just enough to find my way to the bathroom without destroying my night vision, to brightly lighting my entire backyard. Floody beam. Uses a single 18650 cell. I have dozens of scavenged cells that I bought cheap by the pound, and I use those in it.
