   Day 20

I saw the subterranean habitat of several ground nesting wasps.  The round holes are the Haemophilia epiglottis exit tubes.  Actually, the entry tubes also if you think about it.  This large wasp makes a field of bowling ball like clay obstacles.  When a spider ventures across this globular warning system, the wasp hears the stumbles and bumbles as the eight legger tries to navigate its way.  This makes a sound not unlike the 'clack' of billiard balls except on an insect sized scale.  Then the stingy critter rushes out and mimics a friendly spider thus luring the intruder into its den.  After some social interaction and a few drinks, the wasp then knocks the spider out with its stinger.  The next morning, the wasp leaves its den and uses the clay balls to fill in the hole.
The wasp doesn't use an Opinel.  That belongs to me.  Just to be clear.  Best wishes.  G

I'm always happy to broaden the entemol.... entomolo..... intemologi.... bug related knowledge of MTo members.  The Opinel part is fun too.  Back in my happier years when I had a dog, I watched the animal as it plopped down in the yard for a rest from his daily duties of chasing squirrels and pretending to be hungry.  I saw the dog jump up with what I can only describe as a look of surprise.  Then I saw a large ground wasp fly up from exactly where the dog was sitting.  Ground wasps know how to remove obstacles blocking their egress when that obstacle is the caboose of a canine.  Best wishes.  G

Day 20

Rough Ryder RR2081, T10 carbon. I like it quite a bit but pocket clip carry doesn't really work for me, so I don't carry it much. I do use it at home though.

Going out on a limb, here, but seems like everyone is posting their battery powered gizmos lately.

The Boss Lady has bought me my little chainsaw as well as a battery powered pruiner, both of which are quite enjoyable to use.  This, however, she supposedly bought for herself.  She said that the wheels would help her so that she'd be able to sit in a chair and trim and then simply move the chair and repeat the process.

Today, I have to be the one that takes it on its inaugural run.   Lucky me.

DAY 20

The Entrek Javalina, has quite an obtuse secondary bevel, it was sharp, but quite rubbish as a cutter.....I had to knock that obtuse secondary bevel shoulder off....

Now if you have heard of Entrex, you know that Ray (RIP as of 2024), can really bring the best out of 440C steel, and this blade was true to statements....it was crazy hard to grind that shoulder off.... completely devalued the knife, but I use my blades, and would rather lose resale value and use it...

....it's still a wedge of a knife, but now acts a little more like a knife

And the belt picture for the challenge..

Day 20
Had to fix a couple straps (nephews's hat, and my backpack) so out comes one of thoes ubiquitous Chinese leather/cobbler machines.
I have this one mounted to a simple plywood and 4x4 base that can be clamped to a table or bench.

Machines are kind of rough from the factory but do work well. I know some guys go to town cleaning and polishing, but I just took a set of files to knock off some sharp edges and cut a larger nail notch for opening the floor plate.
I need to make a better bobbin winder because while the built in one kind of works it's also kinda garbage, i usually just use a screw with a couple of washers chucked in a drill instead.

I'll said this is probably my favorite of the half-dozen sewing machines I own, seconded by a 1960s White I saved from a is trash pile a few years back. (That one is the wife's favorite with this as 2nd)

The scissors in the pic are the Klein 2100 from my edc

Day 19:

Dismantled my grandmother's Toro trimmer. The head that comes with it is terrible--a pain in the rear to load, and it often jams up. Thus, I decided to see if I could replace it, though I heard it wasn't replaceable with an off-the-shelf head (only Toro's $50 head...).

I first pried the center cap off (twisting it with the 250mm Cobras and prying with my old Stanley Wonder Bar), to find a snap ring securing a nut and slotted center shaft. Grabbed my snap-ring pliers, swapped them over to external retaining ring and yanked the ring out. Then unscrewed the shaft with a slotted screwdriver. Head and spacer came off, revealing a rather standard shaft and a not-too-well protected motor.

It does look like it can take a standard head (I like Husqvarna quick-loaders on my Stihl...) but I don't know about the fins built into the head designed for motor cooling.  The motors are partly why I switched to trimmers with the motor in the tool body--so they can take an off-the-shelf trimmer head intended for gas models.

I'm trying to talk my grandmother into ditching it for Stihl--as parts are easier to source, and I have dealer support.

In case anyone was wondering it actually works but with the wheels it's kinda like running a vacuum cleaner.

Up, back, repeat.

I hate having to vacuum.

Day 21

Monday Mini Challenge:
Automatic Knives

Top to bottom:
Benchmade
Boker Magnum
Boker Plus
Cheap, no name OTF
Cheap, no name OTS

I've had the Magnum for over 20 years and the Benchmade for about 20. Those two have the best quality feel.
I gave $10 IIRC for the OTF at a gun show, probably 10+ years ago. I have no idea where or when I got the cheap OTS knife but it had to have been free or maybe a dollar or two because it's that bad.

The Boker Plus is a recent purchase. It is D2 steel and has a quality feel but not as much as the Magnum or the Benchmade.
