I will make an effort to try to find some 6061 now though in the correct thickness for the next attempt with red liners.

What thickness do you need for the 6061?

0.040 and I just realized I never checked to see if there was that thickness in the batch you sent me, but I had arleady cut the pieces from 7075 at the time and didnt realize it would anodize differently.

If I understand correctly, you are making the anodization yourself ?

Would you have a pic of the setup you use ?

Sorry I missed your question.  I do not do the anodize myself, I only strip the scales to bare Aluminum. I have a professional do the anodizing part.  It's done in an acid medium with refrigeration, not really a home setup I want to do.

Yep cellidor liners are Aluminum.  Really cheap grade, not sure which. I was thinking to try anodizing some to see how they would turn out to jazz up a 91 SAK.  I use stock liners for mods too and for guides to make my custom liners.  A stack of 5 stock liners is my router template guide, and they wear out after awhile.

I just got another run of black parts back today and I tried a new experiment.

(Image removed from quote.)

I made some aluminum keyring/awl spacers and used fine aluminum rod stock to rivet them onto aluminum liners I made.  The idea was that since its all aluminum it would all just anodize.

Well it mostly worked.  The problem is you can see the liners are glossy looking but the spacer turned out more matte.  The liners are 6061 and the other part was 7075 as thats all I could find in the right thickness.

They still might look ok with the orange scales, I'll have to see.  I will make an effort to try to find some 6061 now though in the correct thickness for the next attempt with red liners.

The difference in material shouldn't have that much of a difference in coating. However if one was polished(liner) and one wasn't (keyring/spacer) that should determine the final color/finish. Try polishing one of the keyring/spacer and liner, then try. Should be really close. I guess I've researched to much lol.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

It depends on the kind of anodizing one does. If acid cleaning is involved, different alloys will shows drastic differences, especially in shinyness.

It must be something like that since I had them both finished exact same way.  Sanding up to 800 grit and polished.  They looked identical before anodizing.  Oh well now I know.

I forgot how nice brass and black looks together.  This is a modified soldier with brass liner and scissors.  Small blade for awl, and no opener layer.

Awesome.  :tu:  The badge screams for a brass inlay  :pok:

I like the idea to remove the openers, great to pair with a multitool.

Oh ya brass inlay in the shield would match the brass liner nicely.  Too many cool things to try and not enough time!   :ahhh

Ok, thanks, i've seen some home made anodizing setup and it seemed kind of tricky...

Ok it's time to pull out the orange cerakote scales.  I gotta say I'm loving the orange scales with black liner look.  This is just a test fit up, but I will be assembling one over the weekend.

I think the industrial orange is the perfect color for EDC.  It's easy to reclaim if dropped in the woods or out in the grass at night.  I look forward to seeing some of the finished works.  :)

How does that cerakote stand up in comparison to other coating materials?

I'm pretty curious about that too.  Its not as hard as the anodizing I do, but it wont chip either.  So I'll have to pocket carry one for awhile and see how it holds up.

I have a charge XTi that I had cerakoted. It's holding up well but I carry it in a sheath. But I do use it everyday. It has normal wear and tear but still looks great IMO.

Seriously this turned out way better than I imagined.  The cerakote is lovely and flawless, love the color and the tools slide on it like butter.  I was worried that pivoting on the cerakote might be sticky but it's wonderful. :D

I'd say it feels almost exactly the same as anodizing does, for sure not gritty.  It's much nicer than I was expecting it to be actually.  I couldn't get orange anodizing so this was a great option to get nice bright orange.
