Being a locking pair of pliers
Having a serrated blade (smooth edge blade on my knives)
Being relatively compact :)

Why no love for the integral bit driver? :(

It's mostly because I usually carry a ratchet and bit kit, so it is not something needed (but it is very nice to have the option)

How many is too many?

My fifth Crunch arrived yesterday, a beautiful, unused 0820/0321 model that I think will be my daily.

In my defence, one is still sealed in the box for a gift in the future, so that’s normal, right?

Greetings from Bulgaria  :climber:

I am new to the world of multitools and recently I bought a Leatherman Crunch.

Interesting enough, I received it from a random shop in the Netherlands in this old box with faded colours. As it turned out is was from the original series from 1999 and it was lying around (never used) all those years.

Inside the handle I found the combination 0799/0999 - as I understand these are one of the earliest production markings for the Crunch? Please correct me if I am wrong

I am practically in love with it.. and I should find a newer one, because I feel this particular item has more of a collectors value.

I only have one gripe with it - the tools are fairly loose and open up to about 20 degrees only due to the force of gravity. Is this a common issue or mine is defective? I third to tighten the screw with pliers but just left markings on it.. and now I am sad. Any advice?

Welcome to :MTO:  AStratev

That sounds like an awesome early Crunch :woohoo: sorry to hear about maybe messing up the knurled screws though  you can buy wrenches that will fit them and you can tension the tools to your liking :salute:

Thank you for the warm welcome Poncho!
Can you tell me what wrench exactly do I need to find (because it is not standard to my knowledge and I feel lost)? Do I need to heat the screws before I try to tighten them again? I read that they may be factory treated with loctite.

I will post some photos after work of my awesome Crunch  :woohoo:

Up until the situation with Russia, we had a member who sold these, loki_mobipe but with the trade embargo stuff I am afraid he hasn't had much luck selling stuff lately  he was the best source for those wrenches bar none :salute: you might be able to look up parse wrenches for Leatherman on ebay and see what you can find and try always to get them in a pair as you will need 2

Good luck in the search and glad to have you  can't wait to see the pics of the Crunch  :woohoo:  :like:

I have not had the need to adjust any of my tools yet, but, do you need to use two wrenches or does one suffice? Oddly I have two of the Knipex variant you reference. I see the parse wrenches on the popular auction site - seems expensive for what it looks like, however, having the right tool for the job can make all the difference.

Never can have too many.

Several months ago, the Crunch disappeared off of the Leatherman website and was not available anywhere to purchase.  Though it did eventually make a glorious return, you never know when they will disappear forever.   #juice  So the time to hoard is now.

Says me.   :tu:

Exactly!!! Although I don't see them getting rid of this tool seeing as how popular it seems to be and the posts on social media distraught when people thought it was discontinued.

so i have the wrenches. you might be able to get it done with knipex or other cobra pliers but you run the risk of damage, if not very careful, while gripping the screws.
the wrenches fully grip each of the splines and give you a non marring way to adjust them. And yes you need one on each side of the chicago screw. I have used the wrenches 2 or maybe three times. latest was to swap the pivot on a crunch to add a pocket clip

I too have an extra NIB to have just in case. Completely irrational, but, I am sure no one hear would judge me poorly. :)

if you were nearby (south dakota) i'd be happy to loan you mine if you had a need.

hoarding is not always irrational but it can get that way. When the Juice xe6 was $60 and available every day I only bought them when i needed them. When they weren't available new anymore I bought 3 xe6 and 3 Pro's, plus 2 cs4's 2 s2's, amd a kf4. Then they were available again and I bought 3 more xe6's all because my wife loses one about every other year.

Was wanting a Crunch but had a quick question...

If I tighten the bolt all the way on my vice grips, it doesn't open up super wide but I can use the tool kind of like regular pliers, without it locking (ie, to remove a fish hook, manipulate wire, that sort of thing).  Can the crunch do something similar, or does the head always come apart every time it's opened?

Kinda both
While it is totally possible to use them as regular pliers as long as you don't open the mouth to much (or the head will pop out), it can be a little hard and frustrating to get it going.
Personally, I have them paired with Knipex Cobra 150, or a modded Gerger MP400

Received my Crunch today and am very happy with it. Always loved locking pliers since I was a kid and to get one this cool just floats my boat  :D

Had one of the original Micras for a long time before it was lost (sad times). I replaced it with various other similar tools over the years but nothing really stuck and eventually bought a newer version of it.

Recently I've wanted to get something a big bigger for when I'm away and I was switching between a Wave+, Surge and ST 300.. the latter winning that race as I love the more vintage style looks and wanted something more heavy duty.

However since I have my replacement Micra I released that the only tool I'd really be gaining that I'd use in any serious capacity are the pillars and whenever you use pillars you can't beat locking ones so the choice was made. Still I might pick up a ST300 at some point to complete the set!  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Welcome to :MTO:  Cynan

Excellent pic :like: and a fine choice for a carry :woohoo: :like:

The Crunch and Micra are 2 of the longest produced tools by Leatherman that haven't really went through any kinds of major overhauls or redesigns, that is for sure a testament to their design :salute: :like: :like:
