Defend you favourite knife design.
on: July 17, 2009, 10:37:10 PM
We've all got our favourites, and while we can see why they work for us, it can be quite difficult to win people over to why it's so good :)

I'm a huge Kukri fan, but to a lot of people it's a large, unwieldy knife with a bent blade ::) And try as you might to pursuade them that it's the most versitile blade out there, they just see a big knife that looks like a boomerang (yes I've had this convo a few times ::))

So what's you favourite fixed or folder, and why do you find it superiour to other designs? :)

Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Fixed or folding, I always liked clip or drop point, and NO recurve.

i do can't defend my favorite knife design. i like them all  :pok:
the one i carry the most is an SAK "old soldier".... mostly because it has more usefulness and a close to perfect size for my needs and those alox scales are the shiznits. i like everything about it. this setup is beyond the sum of it's parts. useful, reliable, handy, well ballanced are only a few words that describe it.
the bowie knife is a famous classic fighting knife here in the US so i'll pick that over a gurka but not by much. both to me are really more like short swords than knives. this opens up way more options .
favorite sword? ......... claymore hands down! no reason other than it looks really cool. second favorite... samuri. probably more useful than the claymore in actual use but hey, that claymore sure is sexy!
my favorite kitchen knife is definately the santoku design. again, a classic design that simply overwhelms the chef knife, the clever and the carver. this design redefined kitchen cutlery. second favorite...... 4" parring knife. yet another irreplaceble design that is pure form and function.

As far as a "knife" instead of a pliers based multi-tool I am a huge fan of the "Scout" style knives. Of course I'm including the Tinker, Soldier and Farmer in this lot. Not a lot of bulk in your pocket but with any of them you can handle 99% of the problems that come your way. Plus they're politically correct and you can carry them almost anywhere.

As has been mentioned before on here, you might get frowned upon pulling out your huge multi-tool or tactical folder at a formal dinner to trim a string but pulling out your small scout knife won't raise eyebrows. While it is acceptable at white tie events, the scout knife is equally at home in the field covered with blood, twigs and tree sap.

Why?

I dunno... it looks cool? Historical reasons too, they're execution blades. :D

+1 here.  The SAK design (that's what I call 'em, even though I was a Scout about a hundred years ago) is my favorite also, for exactly those reasons.  Well said!

any kind of blade that prepares food well, like an opinel, pacific salt, other similar blades with a full flat grind.

There's almost always been a Scout pattern knife in my pocket since I was a Cub Scout, maybe age 8.

I've carried Camillus, Case, Vic, Wenger, and even Kamp King Scout patterns - they were all good.

Okay, I'll give this a shot:
I don't think that my absolute favorite knife design is out there...yet.  But I'd have to say that my absolute without a doubt favorite blade design that is available that I own is the Spyderco Dragonfly.  It is small without being too small.  The shape of the handle is great in the hand feels very ergonomic.  It opens very quickly and is very easy to close one handed.  But what I really love about the dragonfly is the blade.  The shape is totally cool to look at but very very functional.  The full flat grind slices through just about anything like butter.  I do like the VG10 steel as it retains a very good edge and the shape of the blade lends itself to easy touch up, resharpening, or reprofiling.  And the weight is perfect.
Now, having said all that (and if you want more specifics feel free to ask...I'm not super knowledgeable about this stuff) I do have one major gripe about it...I hate the pocket clip.  I have the one that has the pocket clip made into the handle.  You can't remove it.  And if clipped in a pocket it rides pretty high which I also don't like.  Other than that it is perfect.
However, my all time favorite knife design would be: Dragonfly blade shape, full flat grind, PE, lengthen the blade by about a half inch or so, the Saver Salt handle shortened about a quarter inch, no liners, lock back, with H1 Steel.  That would be perfect in my opinion.  I'd love to see that knife, own that knife, use the heck out of that knife!!
Have a good one,
Gray

i can also tell you the blade design i like the least. it's that tanto design.......... especially a folding tanto type blade. for the life of me i can find no use or merrit in it. i'm sure lots of people carry one but i think it's more for carry than use.

I'll have to say that the Scout knife is one of my favorites as well.  I love the utility of them, while retaining pocketability and sheeple-ness.  That said, I am a BIG fan of the small knives as well.  I love Pen knives, Peanuts, and the Vic Classic.  Not only are they totally not scary and intimidating, I realized the things I do and situations I come across on a day to day basis only require a small piece of sharp steel.  For the most part, these knives handle 99% of what I need them to.  The other 1% is taken care of with some ingenuity.  Although I am carrying  the Camillus Scout knife for now, it won't be long before my Peanut or Classic are called upon once again for EDC duty.

In FB's I like the Scandi genere , very practical , great workers , nothing you don't need , and very importantly a well thought out , proven and safe sheath system . I'n pocket knives , cant beat SAK's for price to utility ratio . In locking folders , I like Striders , balls out tuff folders , that can do a lot of FB stuff , very grippy , take a lickin and keep on ticking .

Yeah I dislike the look and have never found the tip to be all that functional and they are a pain to sharpen which have to be honed separately from the rest of the blade to avoid being rounded.
I bought a cold steel recon 1 brand new and haven't used it once.  Wished I had of bought a different recon.

I agree, GraysonK.

I have handled various Dragonflies, and have always felt they had the potential to be the best OH opening EDC knife ever made.

But, the lame pocket clip has always stopped me from getting a Dragonfly.

The stainless handled versions have no attraction for me.

The FRN versions come only with that lame clip.

However, IIRC Spyderco is about to release a G10 handle version with a real wire pocket clip and H1 steel blade.

I came close to buying that folder (in tanto as well).  Depending on how it's done, I can like a tanto, however, it's generally not my first choice.

I'm not certain - I'm not a Spyderco fanboy who follows all their new releases closely.

Think I read that about the new Dragonfly model over on the Spyderco forums, but could be confused.

Another knife design I really like is the Navigator 2 from Spyderco. It was one of their "little big knives" and I think that's an excellent description. While it is small enough for office and/or formal carry it is also tough enough that you could use it for the same kind of stuff you'd use a Buck 110 for. Granted the blade is shorter but as far as strength I have no doubt it can handle a LOT of abuse. And the VG-10 steel is superb.

Dragonfly is way too small for me. I like knives that fill my hand at least, not held with two fingers.

i agree...... clip blades always seem to somehow get in the way and catch on things when they shouldn't.
the drop point is a quick and efficient design. it is more precise for me in every way.

i am torn over serated blades. the only one i have used in the better knife blade on the spirit. i like it for what it is and does but, i can do without those half and half blades that can't decide what they are. i never knew that i needeed one until a few (more than a few), years ago and i still don't know why i need one. it's not really like having two blades in one but more a b@stard single blade that does knothing well.
i've got one for quite some time without one. i suppose they are more for people that don't maintain or know how to sharpen a blade properly

I have lots of knives i like-but the Finnish puuku comes to mind.Proven over centuries,i remember seeing them in the deer camps and have skinned plenty of deer with them myself.Although i prefer filet  knives to clean fish, the puuko does that job well also.
