I guess I have to be in considering they make these about 50 miles away from my house!  :D

Here's a couple of pics with the Cold Steel knockoff:

And one with a really cool background!

And a couple with some other really cool knives!

I'm guessing the proper one is better made but how well does the Cold Steel one compare in performance?  Any significant differences?
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Not much in the way of a difference- mostly it's about tradition, for whatever that is worth to you.  The original has nice rosewood handles and subtle texturing along the spine that keeps your hand from slipping over the blade since there is no guard.  The Cold Steel has an injection molded nylon handle and very aggressive jimping on the back that could almost be used as a saw.

To be honest, in an extreme SHTF type situation the Cold Steel might be better off as it's more aggressing jimping and plastic handle would be more impervious to pretty well anything, while the wood handles can swell if not properly maintained.

The Cold Steel version on the other hand lacks the sophisticated elegance of the original- the contours aren't quite as nice, fine control and comfort are far behind the Grohmann.  It's a little like one is a painting and the other is just a photograph of the painting.  One is something that someone put a lot of effort into crafting while the other is a mass produced mechanical copy of it.

I just wish Grohmann used a better steel, as is it's the same thing the $13 CS uses.

If they ever do that I'll get a boat knife, tried #1 and the handle is just too skinny to be comfortable.

I've only seen one in the flesh, and that was Mike's..... (stop giggling now) :twak:

I was really impressed by it. Excellent fit and finish, felt great in the hand (stop it!), and I instantly wanted one.

I'm thinking No'4 buffalo something or the other.... was that it Mike?

Another clone to consider...and much better than a Cold Steel CBK in my opinion...is a Murphy

They were the company that made the knives for Herter's.

I finally pulled the trigger on the mini Grohmann folder.  Slightly bigger than a SAK.  I quite love it and am proud to finally have one.

Thanks, but I think I'd try to get one right from the factory since it's only about 50 or 60 miles away.
