Solid non-brand multitool
on: August 16, 2009, 06:07:36 PM
Hello,

I guess this topic pops up from time to time, so forgive me if I didn't manage to find anything using the search function.

I'm looking for a decent but cheap multitool. Thanks to the finer aspects of global economy all but the smallest models of Leatherman or Gerber are out of my price range, however logic tells me there are more than just two companies that make multitools that aren't made of pressed tinfoil and mud.

First, I want it to be reasonably durable. While I won't be using it as a hammer or throwing it at incoming trains it would be great if it could stand some harsh treatment like not rusting after going through some swamps and still working even after it had contact with dirt or grime.

Second, it doesn't have to have everything imaginable including a portable CNC machine and dildo. Pliers for helping me with PALS, a serrated blade or saw for woodwork, a flat and phillips screwdriver - the essentials. No wire strippers, no beer openers, no wine openers. In general an outdoor tool.

Third, I want it reasonably cheap. How much is reasonably? 70 USD, but hey I wouldn't mind it if it were 40.

Cheers

Well hello there and welcome.
You could find a very, very decent MT from Leatherman, Gerber, or Victorinox in a $40 to $70 price range.  I'm sure you could find a LM Wave in that range and I'm pretty sure that at least one model of Victorinox (Spirit I think).  I'm not the expert on such things and I'm quite fond of LM.  I'm sure the others will be along shortly to give you better advice.  :D
Welcome aboard,

In that range I think you could be looking at any number of tools from any of the major manufacturers, and the folks that advertise here like Tim (Felinevet) and Marc (EDCDepot.com) are fantastic folks to deal with and both ship internationally.

Some options off the top of my head would be Leatherman Juice models, Wave, Fuse/Blast, SOG's PowerLock or Pocket Power Pliers, Victorinox's SwissTool or Spirit, Gerber's MP600, Flik, Freehand or Diesel... there are lots of options in that price range.  Feel free to check out some reviews at the main site here (Multitool.org) and ask any questions you may have as we are all happy to answer them!

Aghh!  You guys keep mentioning it!  You're making it really difficult to resist getting one!  :D But I think you're right.  I forgot about the Core, definitely in his price range.

As an outdoor multitool, I'd recommend the Leatherman Wave. This is because it has an eyeglass screwdriver (could come in handy for sunglasses, a diamond coated file to hone outdoor tools like an ax, and one handed access to knife blades. We can't forget the mountain climber who had to amputate his limb with a pen blade. The first thing he did before going out mountaineering again was buy a Leatherman Wave! The ability to open a knife blade one handed is really something, IMO. Plus, the Wave has multitple carry options. If you don't want to carry a sheath you can buy a pocket clip for $5!

That could be down to the fact that he could only use one handers though  :pok: :D

Well if he wants something of good quality and durability, but is an off brand...how about an Outdoor Edge Trek Tool. I am still impressed with the quality for the price. You get a nice heavy duty tool with the old style locking mechanism where you have to move another tool 90 degrees to disengage. However, unlike a lot of super cheap tools, the locks work very positively. The Awl is very good and handy. It doesn't have the threading hole, but unlike many awls out there, it is long, pointy, and sharp.

Here is a link to a quick review that I did a while back.

Not sure if this is what you’re looking for, but it is worth a look. All the Leathermans, Gerbers,  and Victorinoxs are easy to recommend. Felinevet has great prices on those.
A little Leatherman information.

Thanks for all the great input guys, I'm checking out all of those fancy multitools right now.

Outdoor edge seems to be a very interesting tool. At something like 50 polish zloty it's a pretty good offer, plus it's at a price that everybody from my unit can afford. Which is a good thing, as there are a lot of things we'd need.

I did a quick search but found no supplier that'll do international shipping. I'm mailing some german shop at the moment.

As for the various leathermans - yeah, they're great tools, but slightly off budget. If I had cash to spare, I'd have a ka-bar instead of a glock and bellevilles instead of bundeswehrs, but that ain't gonna happen just yet ;)

US combat boots. Prohibitively expensive around these parts, but very comfortable, relatively lightweight and modern.

Welcome to the forum.  i suspect the answer is to buy internationally (most likely from the USA). A Victorinox Spirit has both a serrated blade and a saw, a Leatherman Blast would also work well for you.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Leatherman Juice KF4. Serrated blade, saw, and 29.- from Germany (the dealer does ship all over Europe). I paid 36.- Shipped, for Pland is a neighbour to Germany too I guess it will be the same for you. Sheath is included, what a bargain!

Search AMAZON.de - there you´ll find it!

I'm not sure if you can still get them but my first MT was a husky I bought for 15$ at home depot and I beat the snot out of that for three years before it broke and I used it for everything from computer work to sawing limbs in the bush on camping trips doing things with my son. It's cheap and I thought it was excellent for the price and held up real well.
