PowerLock saves the day again
on: September 22, 2009, 04:18:58 AM
A little bit ago my three year old son came to me holding his nose and he kept repeating "nose". I looked and sure enough something was stuck up his left nostril. He then looked at me and asked "where is the sog?".  So I tried it and first shot I removed a half inch worth of silicone fuel line tubing used for gas powered RC engines. No doubt from one of grandpa's planes.  Luckily it was fresh, new clean tubing.

When I got done he told the SOG thanks lol.

Good thing it wasn't a blunt nose tool like the powerplier, that would have been ugly.

My brother in-law had a similar incident, only he stuck a marble up his nose when his was a child of course.  But no multi-tools back then to save the day, it was a trip to the emergency room for him. :D

Actually yeah your right.  I'm glad I have the newest powerlock plier head.  Old everything else.  But even the old style PL head might have proved a bit to large.

When I was a child my little brother shoved a fake costume jewelry diamond up his nose and it was an emergency room visit as well.  By the time it was all done that was an expensive fake diamond lol

Sort of reminds me of this grade 11 student years ago that thought he would be funny and shove a jujube up his left nostril. He couldn't extract it, started to freak out. The school ended up driving him to emergency for an extraction. I wonder what the doctor must have thought about that one.  :D

The last time I was at the range the whole family went so I didn't have earphone things so I gave everyone hearo ear plugs. When it was time to go we noticed my sister had one lodged in her ear. So we used a Wenger can opener and tweezers to extract it.

I do prefer the wenger can opener design over the vic one, if needed you can use it as a pick of sorts. It is also a more efficient can opener.

No it's not. For you maybe, but in reality it depends on who's using it and what they're used to. I can open a can twice as fact with a Vic than I can a Wenger because I'm used to it.  8)

I also find the Wenger can opener easier to use but not as easy as my swingaway...

You would be amazed at what ER docs pull out of various places--and then submit to the lab (for  medical/legal purposes).  A freakin' museum of creativity.

A month or so ago a nephew, aged five, should have been smarter, did a similar disappearing trick with a beach pebble.
Luckily the small Victorinox tweezers managed to catch it with a corner jab and pull enough to get it out.

Some people prefer the Wenger and some the Vic. Both are great designs that can be used for a lot of other things besides opening cans. Wenger people love the scraping abilities while Vic people love the fact that the can opener makes a pretty damn good Phillips screwdriver. I don't mind the Wenger design if the knife its on has a dedicated Phillips on it but if it doesn't you're out of luck if you need to screw in a Phillips head. Not so with the Vic, for instance, the almighty Farmer TECHNICALLY doesn't have a Phillips capability but in fact it does.

I can't believe I just lectured on a friggin can opener, I need a life.  :-\

I never thought of using a vic can opener as a phillips.

Maybe I haven't come across the right screws, but it works OK but is nothing amazing.  Tends to round off the drivers head a tad as well.  I wouldn't use that method personally unless I had to.

Could it be that its becase your screws are different in the UK compared to the rest of the world?

We aren't that odd ALP.  :D

I think the main reason is because it's actually a can opener/ flat head driver personally.  :D

I can't believe just how far off topic this thread has gotten lol.

Put if I'm not mistaken my PowerLock (Which is the only multi-tool that I own and actually use) Has a copy of the vic can opener right?  Either way I love it even when I'm home it's the only can opener I ever use.  That is one reason why my kids know what the "SOG" is,  because I'm always opening cans of spaghettios or raviolis for them with it.

I've never used the other types of can openers all that much.  But I can't see anyone of them being as easy for me to use as whatever is in my PL.

Well now that I'm carrying a Wenger for a change, I can say its can opener is good for cutting metal, in a fashion; I absent-mindedly cut the word "EVIL" from a can of Red Devil, shaped it into a kind of badge and fixed to a pal's shirt pocket :)

Early versions of Sogs had the Wenger type can opener,  which also fits the newer versions if I'm not mistaken so essentially Sog owner have a choice.   :tu:

Hey I would think that a locking groove would actually be pretty easy to cut into a non - locking componet  I'd be willing to do the modification just to see the difference.  Now where to get a old SOG Wenger type can opener.

I have also been thinking about doing that, I have a Paratool that I bought of eBay that I was thinking of using as a donor but I just haven't had the time.
