A few Surefire A2 pics.
on: October 02, 2009, 09:14:55 PM
Just thought I'd post a few pics of my latest flashlight, a Surefire A2 Aviator.  It has been modded with super MJ LED's and has also had GITD powder placed behind them so when it's switched off at night time it can be seen in the dark.  Was quite impressed that it glowed all night last night.  I have also swapped the lamp for a Lumens Factory HO-A2 one.

I have tried to take some different pics showing the lanyard attachment, clip and also some of the parts.  Will post up more thoughts once I have used it a bit more.

I'm back!!

Very nice  :tu:   So how much for all the updates. ???
I found a G2 in the highway (it was rather shabby) I replaced the lens with plastic out of a
pop bottle and slapped new batteries in it.

I liked it but soon discovered that it loves to eat batteries now it just sets. :ahhh

If you are into Li-Ion rechargeables, get a pair of AW IMR 16340 cells and an SR-6 or an ES-9 from Lumens Factory.

As they say on CPF - guilt-free lumens.

That's the same as my other one which is a standard Surefire one.  I'll try and get some comparison pics up for you so you can see the difference between the 2.

I can do as many pics as people like, but considering it's been modded a full set of beamshots will be pretty worthless I would expect as they don't give you any impression of what the original should be like.  I am happy to do them though.

BTW Bob, according to the specs the Surefire lamp produces 50 lumens for one hour and the Lumens factory is 120 lumens for 40 mins.  I don't think for one second they are that different in output as there are different ways of measuring lumens, but it gives you an idea.

Wow! 50 versus 120?! There must be some difference though.....?

Well that can depend on which is claiming OTF lumens or lamp lumens I know surefire are usually very conservative in the output quotes  :D

They are indeed.  I have read that they are in fact closer to 80 so although there is a difference still, it might not be as big as you expected.

Yeah I agree there would be a slight difference 80 to 120 but! not visually that much unless you have very sensitive eyes most peeps would never notice remember this rule: General rule of thumb is, when all other things are equal, a light must be twice as bright to be "noticeably" brighter, and four times brighter to appear twice as bright to the human eye.

I think people get too hooked up on lumen output anyway.  A lumen rating is nigh on next to useless in the great scale of things.

here!here!  :tu:

If my chosen light works for the task intended great! I don't worry too much about lumen's after that,I only quote lumen's for reference sometimes people like numbers   ;)

High lumen outputs may be desirable for cops, search and rescue crew, firefighters, and similar occupations.

A typical civilian won't need over 40 lumens in everyday situations, and could probably get by with 20 lumens.

For nearly a century, most people got by just fine with 2D flashlights producing around 20 lumens on fresh cells, then dimming as the cells depleted.

If you have a hobby like boating for example, where it's desirable to see as far as possible out over the water, then a high output light would come in very handy.

If you live on a farm or ranch, where it's useful to check the outbuildings from the back porch, to see across a wide field, etc. then a high output light is necessary.

But, for most urban dwellers, high output lights are more toys than practical necessities.

yep... took me a long time and a fair amount of money to realize exactly that. i can notice when my Ra EDC steps down from 120L to 85L but the difference is small and practically irrelevant.
benner... are you running CR 123s in the A2? i could be wrong but the lamp from LF may be able to handle 3.7 volt lithium- ion rechargeables.

No, it's only a 6v lamp and the LED's can only handle 6v as well.
