Spyderco UKPK v Urban
on: November 04, 2009, 09:14:09 PM
Apparently I can't have both, so I have to choose one for my Birthday present from SWMBO, something about clothing the children or something, I don't know.....

So, if you had to choose, which would you go for - and why?

I used to come here a lot.

Probably the Urban if I'm honest, as it's just that bit more sheeple friendly :)

Plus I reckon it'll be more ergonomic in use, as I get on better with small blades when doing precision cuts :)

Without a doubt, I'd go for the Urban.  The way I see it, the whole point of these knives is to be UK legal edcable, but the UKPK IMO is way to tactical and not sheeple friendly.  Like I said elsewhere, I'd actually sooner carry some lockers over the UKPK.

So, Urban gets my vote if you are going for one.  :salute:  Personally, I think the price of either though is pretty much disgusting for what it is so I wouldn't get one out of principle.  :D

Hmmm. Tbh, I don't care what others think, as both are legal, so I'm more interested in how they might perform.....

The price doesn't matter as I'm not paying :D

I used to come here a lot.

Even on performance I'd still vote for the Urban. The steel's the same, but I still reckon it's a much ''handier'' package :)

Performance is really in what you find better, larger or smaller blades?

They are both great knives, but the price tag is beyond a joke.  Just to clarify, you can get 2 Delica's for the price of one of those.  And why?  Because OH legal folders are rare and so they can charge what they bloody well like.

You are right of course. But they do have us over a barrel, so we've just got to pony up the cash, or take a chance I supose :-\

Or just go the traditional slippy route as I did.  Far more pleasing to the eye looks, more blade options in a smaller package, more sheaple friendly and available for about 10% of the cost.  OH is a lovely feature, but not over £100 worth of feature IMO.

But still, if I wasn't paying who gives a toss!  :D

Exactly!

I'm thinking the UKPK is the way to go. Does anyone have a side by side pic of the two?

Dave,

Having handled both (and owning two UKPK's) my opinion would be to get the UKPK.

Its slightly cheaper (more money to fund your collection of....what was it again....oh yes Leathermans) and the extra length is always useful ;)

MOre bang for your buck and can reach the places other spyderco slipjoints can't reach.

However, opinions vary....itsa just that Mike and Benner are wrong  :P

I'm happy with my Sak's tbh, and the classic slip joint just isn't as appealing as a work knife to me compared to an OH, as it just duplicates a lot of the features of a sak, with not as much utility :-\

Don't know about over there, but over here they say the UKPK is sold out,and no longer available, but if available over there the UKPK is a little longer with a pretty good blade steel. :salute:

Maybe Nick will lend Dave his warrant card for when he get's stopped in the street and escorted to the nearest cop shop for carrying a UKPK :D

Aren't they the same price? Heinnies have them the same, is that not typical?

Not at all - I'm still not decided, but for example, I didn't realise the Urban's blade was smaller. I really couldn't give a toss about what onlookers might think. If it's legal and I can't be arrested, I hope it scares the crap out of them :D

You can still be arrested though  :pok: but lets not go down that route again.

Yes, they are priced the same and I'd still go with the Urban.  The orange one looks pretty sweet.

Well regardless of there apparent legality, I know which one would go down better at work, so I'd stick with the Urban

I love my UKPK and feel naked without it - I didn't want the smaller urban and although I can't compare the two, I'm very happy with my choice.

Whichever I go for, it won't be that gopping orange colour!

Foliage seems nice, and would match my man-bag :D

I don't get that tbh. If it's legal, what does it matter?

So he can't be arrested under the offensive weapons act (a hard one to prove I know) and they can't escort him to a police station to test the knife then?  How comes I have heard such stories then?    There must be some loaded BB members now.  :D

I don't think there's any debate to be had, for all intents and purposes, the two knives are the same!

I think perception is almost as important as legality, especially where sharp's are concerned :)

If I'm cutting something at work with a sak at work, there's less likelihood of a parent putting in a complaint or calling the cop's than there would be if I was doing the self same thing with a UKPK :-\

Yes there both legal, but one's going to raise eyebrows a lot bloody higher than the other, and i really can't be doing with that sort of bother tbh

As in technically they are both legal yes.  But one is cute and comes in a lovely orange flavour with a diddy blade, and one is much bigger and comes in ninja black.  :D  Like Mike says (and clearly many of you disagree with so maybe it's a location thing) perception of a knife is an equal as legality IMO.
I'm back!!
