That is quite the fixed blade isn't it. I'll have to google a pic of the Al Mar Warrior.
I think that example hs had the top Quillion ground down , all the ones I recall had double guards . They were once common , tho very pricey , and very specialized .Chris
Seems odd to me making it from H1.
It was part of the design requirement (by the guy who commissioned spyderco to make it).

The blade is abot 5", serrations on the spine are our normal serrations. The original design was from Michael Echanis. He sent a hand carved wooden model to Bob Taylor. He passed before he could see the knife made. Bob Taylor was the driving force behind the design. Bob was instrumental in the Al Mar version as well as his own production. While the Rafaeli version is different from the others and refined for his purpose, the genetics are obvious.Chuck Karwan knew Echanis and worked with him. He has planned to write the history for us, but he too recently passed away. Good man.I'll try to piece the history together before production. I couldn't make a folding version without Bob Taylor's blessing, and we would more than likely do some mods.sal
The design was driven by Guy Rafaeli. He teaches the Israeli Navy Seals Martial Blade craft. He needed a knife design for their needs. He worked on a design for quite a while and ended up with something he was pleased with. He thought that his design really looked similar to a previous design, which was the Echanis "Warrior" design.Michael Echanis designed the original Warrior while he was working in South America. He send the original hand carved wooden model to Bob Taylor. Bob gave it to Al Mar to take to Seki for manufacture. Unfortunately, Echanis was killed before the model came out. (his plane mysteriously exploded in flight along with some government officials). There have been a number of variations of the model over the years from a number of makers. We're currently working on the history. We'd like to provide a history of the design along with the model when it comes out.Spyderco has been working on the design for a few years. Guy's requirement for 4mm thick H1 did take a while to develop. The design has been refined quite a bit and up alongside of the original Al Mar Warrior, one can see many differences. The full tang is skeletonized for balance and lighter weight.Bob Taylor also made fixed and folding versions of the model as well. Bob used the name "Hobbit" but was asked by the owners of the name to not use the name.We met with Guy Rafaeli in Germany at the IWA show and worked on sheath designs.sal
The story we got from Spyderco at SHOT this year was that the Spyderco Warrior, which is an almost identical copy of the old REKAT version, was designed completely by the Israeli commando who had never seen the original. Ever. Before making an identical copy. Sure, and I suppose Spencer at SOG has never heard of Spyderco.... Def
