Decent sub 110mm pen's?
on: March 13, 2010, 01:05:33 PM
I already edc a compact Fisher for work which I love (sorry Ben :P) as it fit's my need's perfectly, in that it's very robust and reliable :)

But I'd like one for my home/out and about edc too :)

I'm leaning towards getting a second Fisher, but I'm keen to see if there are any other's that fit the following criteria...

Robust.
Reliable.
Long ink life, with little risk of it drying out or leaking.
Must be no longer than 110mm in it's most compact state.
Preferable fairly inexpensive.

Thanks in advance guy's :)

I'm getting on well with my telescopic Zebra pen, although I haven't had it long enough to say how well the ink lasts.  Only 95mm when closed.

Can be found in WHSmiths.

They're not expensive, I got it for about £3 IIRC.

There's a slightly more pricey one as well, called the Expandz as well, about £8.

If you like ink bogies, go with another Fisher.  If you actually want your writing to be ledgible, the Zebra Gareth suggested is a good idea.

I know I rant a little about Fisher pens (...Hey Fisher, your pens produce bogies larger than my 4 year old!!!! >:() but I never realised just how bad they were (from my experinces some of you madmen out there apparently like them) until I started to regularly carry a Parker refill again.  They just write soooooooooooo much nicer.  No more blobbing and no more skipping.  :tu:  Fishers are fine for signing things, but IMO, if you are going to write more than a couple of words, you are better off looking elsewhere.

Well I rarely have to write more than a paragraph or two (usually to explain how it is that there child got a whacking great bump on there bonce ::)) or to sign things :)

And apart from my very first Fisher (had 3 since then) I've never had the booger problem :)

I had 4 in the end, and all of them bogied up so I gave up.  What I always found amazing was that the incredible space pen that wrote on nearly everything, struggled to write on the back of my bloody hand.  :D  The refill in my Fred Perrin pen (Parker one) performs better in every aspect for my uses and is far cheaper.  :tu:  Lamy refills I found were better as well, but not as good as the Parker ones.

I have had three Fishers, two of which I use on a regular basis and I don't have any significant booger-ing either.  Certainly not enough to rival the high capacity booger output of a 4 year old!

I'm not sure if this fits your length requirement Mike, but I've been eying one of these:

I've had similar booger-ing with just about every pen I've ever owned, and much worse from many others.

But then, I've also never tried writing on your hand with any of my pens, so that might be part of the problem!

I have a terrible memory so when I am at work and someone says anything that is needing to be done, or if a parent says they want something, I write it on the back of my hand so I don't forget.  Every day I end up writing a list on the back of my hand with about 10 things needed to be done that I cross off as I go.  This all works great, but to ensure I have enough space, I write things in code, or really simplify them and at the end of the day, I sometimes sit there for ages trying to figure out what the words "Anti's 6" or similar means.  :D

This is one I've had my eye on for a while - refills aren't cheap but it does write very well:

Stainless or Titanium body with carbon fibre components.

I also write on the back of my hand. I also write in code and then it takes me a while sometimes to decode.

I currently use a Pilot G-2 Mini preferably in blue. It writes well on the hand and the writing stays there through several washings. G-2'a are cheap (maybe1$ a piece) so I keep several around in case I put one down. Highly recommended... absolutely no "Tacticool Factor" but they work. Approx. 110mm long.

I've used the Zebra that was recommended and I have 2 problems with it. It doesn't write too well on the hand or on any surface that might have a slight oily film and it tends to come apart in my pocket. If I carried it in a more sensible way that might not be a problem.

I keep my EDC pen loose in my right front pocket along with several other EDC bits. It's not too hard to fish out as it's the only long-skinny thing in there.

I have one- I don't care for it.

It's too much of a hassle to pull it out and assemble it when you want to write something, then disassemble it when you are done.  The Fisher Bullet is nice because you take the cap off, stick it on the back end and have a full sized pen.  With the Inka model you have to pull the front half out of the back half, unscrew the tip of the front half, unscrew the back half from the carrier piece, then flip the back half around to screw the front half to the back half then put the little cap in the end.  The, you have a pen, and you have to reverse all of that to put the durned thing away.

Way too much effort in my mind.

LOL, I've not had those problems but then a) I don't habitually write on my hand and b) I don't carry pens in my trousers' pockets. :D

Carrying a pen in my trouser pocket and writing on my hand are both excellent solutions to what has resulted from my checkered and pharmaceutical past.

ie. I cant remember stuff and I cant find something to write down the few things I do remember.

I am a genius and it's sad so few people can see that.

And... oh heck... I was going to say something brilliant and I can't remember what it was................ Look!... A squirrel

I have a few short Zebra pens, but I usually shorten my own pens with a saw and a pair of diagonal cutters.

I'd go with the Zebras personally. I've both a bullet and a telescobing Zebra in my notepad holder but I usually go with the Zebra. :D

And I swear you are just imagining that booger problem. Really.

I love the shape and size of the Bullet but the occasional ink boogies can be a real nuissance (especially if they decide to appear on some official paper). I used to carry a Zebra Telescopic before that but I didn't quite fancy its size (even in its extended form it was a bit short for my hands) or refill (I killed the first one in less than a month and then couldn't find a refill >:(). I recently bought an F-301 Compact (through the Neil Be(e)nevolent Foundation :P) and carried for a couple of days, only to find it was a bit on the large side in its closed form, at least for my likings. So I went with the best of both worlds: Bullet with a Zebra F refill. :tu: :D Their refills are practically the same length and the only "modding" necessary is wrapping an inch or so of tape around the first couple of mm's of the metal tip to remove the (tiny) wobble; the tip of the Fisher refill is a couple of mm's shorter than that of the F, while both refills are the same width at the part before the tip. (...did that make any sense? )

Just my 0.0145e :P
