Sharpeners...What do you use?
on: April 18, 2010, 05:17:14 PM
I am by no means a sharpening pro. I can however, put a wickedly sharp edge using a few sharpening tools that I like. My father was great with a wet stone. I know my limitations. I have a bit of hard time with angles etc...more importantly, in the uniformity along the edge. So I stay away from those if I can. My go to sharpeners are the Edgemakers. I love these simple to use tools and I do 70% of all my sharpening with them. For the other 30%, I will use a Smith's E-Z Sharpener. I also have a Spyderco Triangle, but haven't quite found the knack to use it as I would like to. I reckon practice on some trashed blades might help. I also have a few other simple knife sharpeners that see use in the kitchen knife drawer.

Well what is a thread without some photos.

My father’s wet stones. I believe one or two came from my grandfather at that.

I love these Edgemakers. Can you tell?

A few little ones for sharpening small kitchen knives. I keep this in the knife drawer for quick easy access.

I love this system. I can get a real nice sharp edge using it easily.

The Spyderco Triangle system.

And all of them together.

So what do you use?  Photos would be great.

I am very partial to the Edgemaker. Super easy to use and does a great job.

Here is a YouTube video showing them in use...

Well that video helped quite a bit.  :tu:

The instructions with my Sharpmaker was a bit dodgy. Still prefer the Edgemaker because it does both sides at the same time.

Sharpmaker/diamond stone/strop for at home use, India stone and hard Arkansas stone for Mora, small ceramic and diamond stone for field sharpening.

Also a Lansky's carbide quick edge for hatchet, tried convex and mirror edge on it, but every time I spent more time sharpening it than it stayed sharp.  ::)

Smiths Diamond Rod for field sharpening, Smiths triangle (sharpmaker clone and about half the price) for most anything else.  I also have a few whetstones, and a 6,000 grit Japanese water stone that I rarely use.

Fallkniven DC4 for field use. The diamond coated side is useful for reviving a dull blade, then onto the sharpmaker to finish.

Free hand using a variety of stones ranging from my DMT Diahsharps, Spyderco ceramic bench stones, Norton 11.5 inch Tri-Hone, down to a Lansky puck. But always free hand. I don't know why I hang onto my EdgePro I haven't used it in years.

I use and love my Spyderco Sharpmaker, but I've been wanting to give one of those Smith's systems a try.

Well, i got a Lanky set, a Sharpmaker by Spyderco and some ceramic rods. But the most often used sharpeners are my benchstones. Got some made in Japan, some are cheap rough stuff i use to get a rough edge on, my fav. are the ones from Belgium, they are natural stones, called here in Germany "belgischer Brocken"
http://belgischerbrocken.xoserv6.de/index.php?language=en
they are pretty rare in good quantities but the best i found till now.
Also the good old Arkansas is with me since 1998, good for hiking and outdoors, you don´t need water for it, just oil or like me, spit on it :D
The edge you put on with a stone is much more durable than with ceramic rods, thats why i´m using them so much.

Best wishes
Robert

Don't laugh, a little work on these and you can have a razor edge.

Done that a few times myself after a bloke called Ramel over on KF told me about it :)

I use a Sharpmaker for home, and either a duofold DMT or Falkniven DC4 when at work/out :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

Mostly, wet & dry sandpaper, and a DC-4 when in the field.

That's a very good method, add some water and you'll get better results.

Got a Lansky Puck dual grit stone in the mail today, and set to trying to put an edge on an obscenely dull old hatchet.  This is gonna take awhile, lol, and it's too hot to sit outside on the patio, so back inside and in front of a fan and air conditioning to work on this for a bit...  :D

I grew up using stones, most of the time ordinary rocks cause we didn't have money to buy fancy sharpeners. For most sharpening duties I use these

A series of water stones, a lansky quick fix for touch-ups and a diamond coated cheapo rod for my combo edged blades

Big salutes to freehand sharpening. Once you get to lock in on the bevel, its almost a pleasant experience as the edge cuts into the stone

My new combo bench stone and two portable stones I bought during vacations. The rest are back home, shown in the large family photo. I still learn and just touched up my Bahco I used against rocks. I like stones. The Opinel is the finest I have. All the others are coarser. Ceramic (Victorinox) is fine too.

I dont know if i should admit this or not but ive never really used anything fancy on my blades.  Its usually just a cheap chainsaw blade sharpener! Then a rub on the top of a car window. I was taught this by my old boss and it was to sharpen my hoof knife which was then used to trim horses feet. (The blade is curved) So yes it leaves a sharp edge. Then my father-in-law taught me to sharpen on cinder block, brick, door step etc. He worked on building sites for over 50 years and sometimes you just had to make do with what was about at the time. Oh wait i had a nice fancy ceramic rod for a while until a horse kicked my box and it shattered into bits! Grrr
