Ouch!

Due to an odd circumstance, when I saw the camping logo photo for a Ranger SAK but didn't have time to look at all the photos before I would become occupied through dinner time and through the duration of the auction, I placed a hurried bid.  I won the auction but it turns out that the seller was using a new Ranger with Camper logo stock photo to show off all the Ranger tools and actual photos with no Camper logo to show the actual tool.  My fault for not reviewing all of the photos but shame on the seller for using the Camper logo!

Good news!  The seller came through with a refund when I pointed out the false impression the stock photo with Camper logo presented.  I already have a very nice Ranger and don't need another.  I do want a SAK with a camper logo and probably should target an actual Camper since I don't currently have one.

I have admired the WorkChamp from afar but had some reservations about getting a 110 mm SAK.  Yesterday, I saw an auction ending for a Hercules and the bid amount was much lower than expected so I offered what turned out to be the winning bid.  I am pretty sure that I will really like it and end up getting a WorkChamp as well.  :)

You're right!  How could I have missed that?  I was probably more shaken up by the false Camper logo Ranger photo than I thought.

That's two incidents of seeing what I expected to see within hours of each other.

Thanks for pointing out that I have a Workchamp on the way!!!  Very happy about this development!

SG, you have cheered me up considerably!

There's a bit more behind my absent mindedness...a good friend and former classmate passed away at 72.  We check in a couple of times a year on our birthdays and exchange Christmas cards.  I hadn't heard from him and found his obituary when I did an online search.  Needless to say, his death was quite the shock.

The two incidents of e-bay absent mindedness is a good wake-up call.  It's one thing to be careless on e-bay and quite another when driving. :)

my $12 SOS kit made it here.

I paid $2.69 for shipping, looks like the seller lost a bit more of his profit. since the shipping was more than the listing required.

this pouch does look to be as near new as you can get without the box still being sealed.

the velcro shows little if any signs of use.

this stuff is not in the right spot, but the seller did take it out to take the ebay photos.  (the marks on the flaps do not line up with how the stuff is in the case, indicating that it WAS in there right before the photo)

BUT IT WAS THE RIGHT STUFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only thing missing as far as I can find is one of the two Safety pins.  (of all pieces to be missing, that would be the one to miss)  I will have to get a replacement.

now to the SwissChamp itself

hard to see in the photo, but there is factory oil on the back tools (I wiped it off of the chisel without thinking before I took the photo)

the spacer for the small blade looks to be brass, I may normally be brass, I just have never noticed.  I noticed on this one.

you can see that it has the Gr[a|e]y plastic mag glass, the older file without the V cut, scissors have a silver screw, and the pliers do not have the crimper.

the pen was a little bent, but I straightened it and it does write

and I like the text on the blade,  I KNOW it was bought in Geneve.

not the best photo, I had trouble capturing the writing.

This SAKs should technically not exist, so that leads me to believe I can lock the date down even further.

***my date ranges might be off, if anyone has better info, please let me know***

1975 - 1990  Scissors have a screw joint
1975 - 1990  File smooth to the end without the "V" pattern

so at this point, our date would be BEFORE 1990.

1991 - now  Corkscrew solid (not flutted)
1991 - now  has a Hook
1991 - now  Key ring is on the spring, not the liner
1991 - now  Scale has pin hole

Which would lead to 1991 or AFTER

at this point I would imagine this SAK was made in 1991, and the scissors and File were holdovers from the previous year.
If I can help, let me know

+1 on great deal!

The pliers have no crimp and the scissors have a screw...if the key ring was located on the cork screw layer, I would say it was an 86/87 Swiss Champ.  As it is, I am stumped.

I am very impressed with the Pioneer X.  I just used the awl on mine today to make a new notch on a belt I haven't worn for some time (doing yard work).  All I can say is that the awl is simply amazing!  Since I frequently have use for the scissors, this is a great tool for me.  The only reason that it doesn't get more use is because of my partiality towards the Explorer.

Hope you enjoy your PX as much as I enjoy mine!

I always thought a sak was just a plastic one, then I got my first alox which was a cadet, I was like now this is cool! Then had to get a farmer, and yes that awl omg I can't believe how much that thing has done, that's sooo good!

When I saw a YouTube video of the awl drilling a hole through (an admittedly soft) block of wood, it got my attention.  The belt notch was the first time I used this particular awl and I was amazed at how easy this was (almost effortless) while wearing the belt.

I agree about the Cadet (been carrying it since I got it).  I planning to make either the plain Pioneer or the Electrician my next Alox purchase.

Oh I've used that awl on plastic, wood, leather, and I even think metal. It freaking works, as for the farmer, that wood saw has come in handy a few times, works great on pumpkins, that was its first job from back when I got it, for some Halloween thing we had on here.. but I added a clip on it and it became my everyday knife, but that's about to change, cause now I'm going to have to switch between the farmer and pioneer-x!
