Bear & Son Cutlery knives?
on: December 03, 2010, 05:16:47 AM
Does anyone have them?  What is their quality and fit and finish like?  Comparable to their multitools, or to Case, Queen, etc.?

Urg, this is what happens when I start to Google.  As an aside, kudos on them for updating their webpage; it looks a lot better now. :tu:

[Edit:  I like their 2.75 inch Jack, 3 inch Peanut, 2.25 inch Pen, and 3 inch Small Stockman, for example.]

Sazabi,

I have a few of their newer made pieces. A standard Trapper with TiNi coated blades, a jumbo Trapper from their Heritage Series, and a Bear-built Remington Scout. The standard Trapper is perfect. The Jumbo Trapper came with some issues, enough that if I had paid going price for one it would have been returned. And the remington Scout is decent with a minor issue but is way overpriced for what you get.

My friend Marv who is also a knife collector has bought several newer Bear & Sons pieces over the past year. He has about a dozen and won't be buying anymore. Nearly all of his came with some kind of issues, most minor, but a few had to be sent back and his last one was a Bear-built Remington "Lock, Stock, and Barrel" Silver Bullet Trapper that is going back for an out right refund......it was horrible. Both blades had lateral play, it's a locking Trapper with lock bars for both blades and one was so soft I wouldn't trust it and the other was so tight I had to use the edge of a table to pop it. Both blades had uneven edge grinds.....real ugly. And there were gaps all through the lock bar area. For a $109.99 knife it was an absolute joke.

All that being said if you get your hands on them before you buy find one with a good solid F&F.....they can be good knives. If not I wouldn't take the chance. Their Quality Control is very spotty. But even on their best days they ain't no Queen or Case. Bear & Son still has a ways to go before they reach that level.

Ah, thank you 'Tap; I was mainly just looking at a couple of their $30-40 models for down the road, but with no actual dealers who carry their stock that I know (rare, I know, but it happens  :-\), I think I'll pass on them.  I like the look of the rosewood scaled ones, but not if they're that spotty.  I'm not one who likes to play Russian Roulette with stuff, hence why I try to do research. :/  Oh well, I guess I'll just stick to my black G10 Peanut.

Sazabi,

I know what you mean bud, I've got numerous stores and shops in my area that sell all manner of knives but only one in the region here I have found that carries any Bear stuff, a hardware store, and most of what they have is still old stock Bear MGC. And they out of almost all of that. For the price range you mentioned Case has a lot to offer, especially in their American Workman Series. And Queen has released several patterns from their Queen City line specifically for the lower end market.......a less expensive line made up of brush finished 1095 blades with either delrin or laminated wood scales. F&F is typical Queen quality though. These are well worth a look as well. SMKW's has had some big sales on these over the past month or so and some have been as low as $19.99......for a Queen!

Grant,

Great review bud. And I will say the Bear built Remington Scout I have has the same issue your Bear Scout has......mainblade kick is too short and the edge hits the center pin hump of the backspring if closed under full spring pressure. Bear is using old Camillus tooling for these, I think they need to some upgrading.

Bear and Sons was my first ever knife.  My dad bought it for me in 1994 and had the bolsters engraved.  I think its a 2.5 manager lockback.  Very tiny, but was perfect for a first knife.  I'll get some pics of it later.
