I'm done with Gerber
on: January 11, 2011, 07:23:39 PM
I am getting rid of all my remaining Gerber products.  In addition to the Octane wire cutters not working when I needed them, the Shard let me down on a simple task the other day.  There are other factors which I will not get into but I don't think I'll be buying anything else by Gerber.

The Phillips does not work, the forked pry bar does not function as a slotted driver, the prybar is not ideal for certain prying tasks.

The rest of the product line can be a little dubious, the 4-600 series and the Diesel are a safe bet :)

As is most of there torch line imo

i agree with most of that, the phillips on mine is oaky not that id want to use it any great deal. The pry bar has proved to be handy for me on numerous occasions though

I have never seen a prybar that is ideal for every prying task  .       Have you?

Well, I hope the split is amicable and you keep a brave face in front of the other MTs.

I was researching this just a couple days ago. From what I was able to discern online the 600 series (at least some of them) are made in the USA. I could find no data stating that the 400 is still US made. That is disappointing because I have a 12 y/o USA 400 that other than some minor surface corrosion is still running strong after being used a lot harder than a tool should.

Again, not an expert. Just my opinion based on what I could find. I'm sure someone more knowledgable will jump in here.

When I inquired last year, I was informed that both the 400 and the 600 were still USA made.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Plus it's top place is based largely on the price.  Of all the Gerber's out there it's also about the last one I'd recommend.

I'm with Pacu and Mike though, I rather like my 600.

I agree, I have yet to find or handle a Gerber that I don't hate. I would love to give them another chance as they do have some cool designs, but the build quality...blah.

You guys are finally getting wise to Gerber.  :D  Back in the 70's Gerber was a big name with quality products. Now they're just a big name trying to pawn off their junk on us.  ::)  I have really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt and have tried some of their newer products but its always the same; poor fit and finish and a tool that should sell for 1/10th of the actual selling price. I'll never buy another Gerber product again...

I still think you guys are being quite harsh on Gerber.  I don't know what the full retail prices are in the States but here the Gerber MP600 and LM Blast come in at pretty much the same price.  Now, of course, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but mine is that the Blast and the MP600 are really quite well matched in terms of built quality.

Whether or not you like the features on each tool is a matter of personal taste, each tool has it's strengths and weaknesses, but I do think calling all Gerbers' products rubbish is unfair.

As ever though YMMV. :D

Fair play John. :salute:  like I said I'm not going to start telling you, or anyone else, what to think.  I just don't want the poor chaps at Gerber thinking we all dislike their all of their products.  Some are pretty below par though. :D

...about the price - I took a quick look for Suspension, it seems to be that local price tags are somewhere between 50 - 80 USD. What a bargain when you think that its the test winner.  :ahhh

I think everyone should at least sample an MP series tool, as they really are a great no nonesense tool :)

Are you sure that's what I should base my opinion on?  The only MP-series Gerber multitool I ever bought:
1.  Had such poor fit and finish that if I hadn't bought it at a retail store I would've thought it was a Chinese knock-off, and
2.  Broke within three days and I'm *still* waiting to get the damned thing back from Gerber's Warranty department.

The only, and I mean ONLY Gerber multitool I've ever bought that I truly liked was... a Clutch.  Which I gave to me dad for hiking.
Solstice isn't bad either but the scissors constantly need resharpening.

Sorry you got a turkey mate :-\, but we've also had many a report of a poorly put together Charge or Juice and broken Skeletools (for example), so I wouldn't write of a whole line based on one bad egg.

On the other hand I totally agree that the Warranty shouldn't be any kind of hassle, how long since you sent it in?  I hope they sort it out soon mate. :)

I know it's not fair to judge based on one example, but it was my first MP series after having bought a Flik and both were utter crap.  On the other hand, the first, like 4 Leathermans I bought were great (PST, Flair, Kf4, Wave, in that order).

As to warranty service, well I sent it in November, and I got a shipping notification from Gerber mid-December.  Hopefully it just got caught up in the Christmas shipping delay (it took over 4 weeks for something to get to me from 4Sevens).
