How many variations on the MP600?
on: January 12, 2011, 11:54:44 PM
OK so I was given a MP600 for Christmas and quickly realised it wasn't exactly what I was expecting.  The box says it's a MP600 and it has a different tool line-up than I'd seen;

Disappointed it doesn't have a small screwdriver and would have preferred two separate blades (one plain one serrated) but I do rather like the little awl.  I'm actually rather pleased with the Gerber overall, though my playing with the sliding head rather drove SWMBO to distraction.  :-[

So my question is this: just how many tools go by the name MP600 (current or recently retired) and do you have any pictures? :D

That's the first time I've seen an awl like that.

It seems like a good tool but I've not really tried it yet, very confident it will be fine though.

There are many versions of the MP600.   I think that one is the Sportsman.   I would call it an economy model of the 600 since it only comes with one blade.   Most other versions that only have one blade come with a scissors and or saw,or both. Like the Proscout.

There's a dang big bunch of 600 versions. :o Needlenose, blunt nose, stainless finish, bo finish, camo finish, painted color finishes, different blade combinations, carbide inserts, no carbide inserts, etc etc. The variations seem endless! :ahhh

Here are three recent ones, with blunt nose jaws and carbide wire cutters. :)

I don't know if that version has its own unique name Ivanov  But it is the newest revision of the MP600, with a Wharnecliffe knife blade and carbide insert wire cutters. :)

Ah, because of the saw coupler? Maybe somebody swapped it in for the sheepsfoot knife blade? ???

I have some old .pdf's with about ten different MP600 variants in them.  I'll get them posted as soon as I find them.  It's not a complete listing, but enough to get us started.

This link should take you to a zip file with the pdf's in it:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/762283/gerber.tgz

Someone let me know if it doesn't work and I'll extract and post them individually.

It worked for me. This is a tar file gzipped. You must use a modern archiver (winzip, 7z, izarc, ...) that understand this format. Or in linux: tar zxf gerber.tgz

As soon as I get a chance (unless someone beats me to it) I'll open it, separate the files and post them individually.

Thanks everyone for these scans. I am a fan of the MP400 and this is the first time I've seen the 400 Fisherman. I'll have to keep my eyes open for that one.

I want to make gifts for my father, father-in-law and brother-in-law in February 23. In Russia this day is great public holiday - day of Defender of the Fatherland (ex Red Army Day :salute:)
I bought whis army issue gerber mp600 and 2 ordinary black mp600 with blunt nose.
I think they will enjoy these tools.
I apologize for my poor english...

Here are some OK macro pictures of the Gerber USGI MP600 07550G.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/ham4mhzr9o8i2k5/F9jcuSEOh_

I really like this tool a lot. The one handed "flick" opening of the pliers is invaluable when on a ladder, etc. You really become addicted to it.

I have a few of these NIB for sale/trade.  If anybody is interested, PM me.

Also, another alternative to 7ZIP (not sure if 7ZIP is 64bit or not) is a program called WinRar.  It can be downloaded from here: http://rarlabs.com/download.htm  - It does all popular archive formats. (Zip, 7zip, Tar, RAR and many more..)

WinRAR is shareware (29$ for single user), 7ZIP is freeware.
There are more interesting applications of 29$ :) For example one more MP600

Haha.. True.

WinRAR is "basically" free though.  The trial version never expires.  :o
