Rapala Birch Collection

Rapala introduced their new Birch Collection. Seemed to be priced reasonable. Nice looking I think. Might be worth checking out.

Lots of nice looking knives there. Are they scandi grind?

They are indeed pretty.  I hope they have used a half ways decent steel.

From what I found on their website, they are made by Marttiini and the steel is German 420. So not very exotic steel, but I bet it takes a wicked edge. :)

That's kind of what I was thinking. Might not hold an edge for a real long time, but will get wicked sharp.

I've a couple of their fillet knives and they're that way. Get like a razor.

That's good news.  Often when a company licenses their name to a knife it's a crappy cheapo made of pot metal.

I'm ok with a relatively soft steel in an outdoors knife.  I like the ability to field sharpen it with a basic crock stick or even a rock if that's all that's handy.

If they are made by Marttiini then they'll be good knives.

That's good to know.  I have never owned anything by Marttiini so I wasn't sure what to expect.

Just reading a couple of user review on these and the consensus seem to be good, but the handle has a polyurethane coating that feels pretty poor.  I think a bit of sandpaper and elbow grease will sort that out though.  The drop point one has caught my eye.

Looks like somewhere in the region of $25-$30.

I'm thinking that a person with some modding skills could rehandle it pretty nicely.

Some shaped G10/Micarta on there.

And as mentioned, easy enough to refinish the wood handle. Maybe stain it too a different color....
