What other colours were on tap when Gerber produced these Bob? I know of the green.

In addition to your red, yellow, and blue, there was also green, orange, and white. :) The red version and the yellow version were available in a special combo pack with a cheap plastic flashlight. Or, any of the six colors could be specified when you ordered your tool online during the Build Your Own Gerber program they did back in 2001.

(sorry, that's the best pic I can find)
The colored Gerbers on eBay don't come along very often, and because the paint chipped easily they are often in pretty poor-looking shape. Looks like you got some nice ones there Dan. :)

Nice group Chako.  Is it just me that wishes the 'design your own MT' option was still there? :dd:

I now have two greens. I placed a bid on both thinking I would have twice the chance of winning one. However, I won both. Did I ever mention green is such a nice colour. :D

Thanks. So I guess I am now only missing an orange and a white. I do have a white/cream Operation Iraqi Freedom...so maybe only missing an orange then.

I was able to pick up a green MP600 from those auctions (sorry if I outbid anyone here).

It came yesterday and it's in absolutely pristine condition considering it's age (7-10 yrs old?). The fit and finish is way better than any current models, USA or otherwise, that's I've put my hands on. Everything locks up tight and is well-finished. It's so nice in fact that I went back and put a winning bid on a blue MP600! These things are going to be fun to collect..... now I want a yellow and orange one!

Does anyone know what prompted Gerber so stop the online custom set-up?

They didn't come out and say as much, but rumor is that it was a lot of hassle to manage the program, and there wasn't enough special orders coming in to make it worthwhile. :-\

Pure speculation:
So I imagine when the accounting department looked at the cost of putting together "custom" tools one-at-a-time, versus the cost of putting together thousands of identical tools on an assembly line basis like they do now, the economics just didn't make sense. For the program to be profitable, the cost of the custom tool would be so much higher than the standard tool that most people probably wouldn't be interested. :(

(I wish I knew how much a BYO Gerber cost back then versus a standard Gerber, so I could test my theory)

J-sews: thanks for the info!

I'm liking these older 'Made in USA' models, especially the colored MP600's and the original Multi-Plier design. What's the story on the Operation Iraqi Freedom model? NSN issue?

Necro thread revival ....

I just got this orange gerber (ebay item # 230976369589 then click on "see original listing" to see all the photos if the link below doesn't work), and was wondering what the L shaped tool with the pointy end was designed for ?  It is the only component that shows much use, but it seems to have been given a pretty good work-out. I was thinking something to do with scraping/cleaning some kind of gun ?

That, I believe, is a hoof pick.  Normally found on a Trailrider as seen here in David's post.
