VERY Impressive, Inexpensive Custom Neck/Utility Knife
on: October 14, 2011, 02:14:03 AM
Well, a couple weeks ago I was browsing eBay and found someone selling a custom made neck/utility knife for $17 shipped to the US.  There weren't many details outside of size and weight listed in the auction so I ended up messaging the seller about it.

He came back and said that the steel was 440C, 56-58 HRC, and the blanks were laser-cut and hand ground.  He was selling the last of a lot of 50 he made and just wanted to get rid of the things.  Interesting.

So, with a little help from Bruce909 I was able to get my hands on one.  I have to say for a total of $20 to me in Canada I am *very* impressed.  The knife isn't perfect - I ended up taking some 320 grit wet-dry and polishing out a few scratches in the blade and I completely re-did the awful handle wrap job, but otherwise, it's fantastic.  The grinds are straight and clean, the knife is well balanced around the ricasso and it's fairly thick stock (3/16").  I was originally going to give this to my Dad as a camping knife but I think I'm going to keep it and give him something out of my collection instead.

He's still got a few left, I'll throw a link up in the "deals and auction" thread if anyone is interested.

That looks a lot like the utility knife blanks I bought from a Knifemaker's supply a few years ago. I'll have to dig mine up for a comparison.

Entirely possible, but hardened, sharpened and with a kydex sheath is still a smokin' deal for the price.

I should say I put this knife through hell in my dad's garden over the weekend, digging up the remaining plants, cutting up the composting and taking apart all the trellises and it held up very well.  Quite happy.

While I really have no personal use for one of these I also really like the look of them for some reason. :tu:

I just beat on it and use it for dirty work. I did make a sheath from a Tide detergent jug though  :D

I got one from eBay today.

Quick review:
  • Blade grind (hollow) and edge very good
  • Sheath is top notch, well made, and attractive
  • Handle cord wrap is less then mil-spec, only 6-strand cord.
  • Neck cord is hollow, no inner strands, serviceable for it's use
  • eBay seller is A+. Contact's you right away, and gets all your custom preferences (sheath/cord colors and lengths)
Never underestimate the power of the fleece

A quick question, at 3 1/8" does it fail to comply with most states carry standards? I am looking at similar fixed EDC knives.

Thanks!

It all depends on each particular state's law. Take here in Michigan for example, while there is no written restriction on blade length, fixed blades can only be carried if they are designated as a hunting knife and intended to be used as such.

Take a look here:

Wow! According to the link my newly-acquired CRKT Dogfish is illegal because it doesnt fold. Seems this would be the case with the above knife in my particular state.

Thanks for the link.
