Any idea of what it is?
I don't have big knowledge on the 65mm models, but it seems almost an hybrid between a Macao and a Lithos.
Right now I'm calling this a Mac-ithos  :D

i like it, interesting nailfile :)

I've had my first three Wenger 85mm's for about a week now and have to say I'm underwhelmed...

These three were all used models, ...
As has already been mentioned... "There's your problem!"

My new Evo S14 is a great little SAK!  It's been my primary pocket carry SAK from the day I got it.  F & F are just as good as Vic's IMHO and there are some things I like about the Evo better than the comparable Vics.

I've got an S16, S52, and S557 all on my wish list now.

You prefer the evo scales over the classic scales then?

My first encouter with a Wenger was just as negative.  I picked up a used Forrester on ebay and it was awful; bent blade, loose spring action, bent saw etc.  Finally I had to pull the whole thing appart and I rebuilt it as a Traveller, much better knife now.  I have had no such issues when buying a new Wenger though. :tu:

I definately give folks the warning light on picking up too many Wengers online at once unless the seller has a good rep for honesty and good descriptions.  After handling several from ye old auction site, the conditions have been all over the place.  Of special note is the scissors, scissors pivot can be very squirelly (I suppose that could be true for Vics as well).  Luckily my key Wengers- a Metal 50, Master, and Galahad Lock have been pretty good.  The MB spring in the Master seems to be extra soft though, so it might be going in to the shop.

Absolutely  :ahhh Good luck with it all, and don't forget to post how you get on  :salute:

Well, I bought some Lock-Tite last night and redid the scissors screw. The Lock-Tite is less viscous (i.e. more watery) than I had expected and, consequently, I'm not sure how much of it is actually on the the threads. It's more than a bit fiddly to align the scissor blades and get that tiny screw threaded and screwed in with only two hands and a Vic mini screwdriver. But I'm sure at least a tiny amount of Lock-Tite is in there now and am hoping for the best.

If this doesn't hold well, I may try unscrewing it slightly and applying the Lock-Tite from the bottom and then retightening (but not over tightening) the screw. I put the drop of Lock-Tite in the hole before putting in the screw, which is a delicate operation as described above.

Anyway, a boring story for you ... but you asked!  ;)

Nice one  :tu: I'd allow it twice the cure time it says on the packaging then try it with a screwdriver. At least that way you can have another crack at it by backfilling the hole as you said  :salute:

Yep.

The packaging says it sets in 10 min and fully cures in 24 hours. I put it away for about 90 minutes and gently tested it by working the scissors a couple times (couldn't quite resist ... plus I wondered if any Lock-Tite got between the scissor blades and might be a problem). Then I put it up and am not carrying it today. I'll test it with a screwdriver. I don't expect it to feel super-glued in there, but hope it's firm. Thanks for the advice.

Very nice, congratulations!
I think it is the model also known as Catch and Release.
Too bad that someone used too much the ceramic file.

The Wenger is new.
The file came like that and does not look used.
I assumed it was like that on the side to allow sharpening of hooks etc.
If you think it was used then I may need to discuss it with the seller

Yes, we have a sakwiki entry for it as Catch and Release. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Catch+and+Release

dks, do you have a model number on the box too. maybe a European identifier number we can add to the wiki?

I suggest you to discuss, then.
here is a good picture by ICanFixThat, where you can see how the ceramic tool is supposed to be on both sides
http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=File+-+Ceramic+Diamond+Coated
Perhaps I'm wrong, but that white part from your picture at the end of the file seems to me a sign of use.
I do have a mint "Troller" and I can confirm you that my ceramic tool is exactly the same as the one shown in the link above

Fly fisherman catch, new.

That really is a great find, I've been looking for one of those for a little while.

While I think the file may not be 100% correct, it looks more like a factory error, or possibly something they did on purpose at one time.  It does not look like usage to me from what I can see in the photo.

If you're unhappy, I'll happily accept it as I'm not likely to use that file.

I think the computer system had the name of the knife as "Fly Fisherman Catch & Release", but that was simply too long to print on the label.

Enci, the knife was bought from a US seller.
The number given by him was 16956.
Here is the picture of the file given by the seller.

The seller describes the notch as a Fly-tying groove and it was made in 1996.
"Description: This discontinued model was listed in the 1998 Wenger catalogue as the "CATCH AND RELEASE".  It has 19 functions including a unique, diamond coated fish hook sharpener with a fly-tying groove..."

Maybe a fly fisherman will know.

As I said it looks like an intentional cut in the file rather than a mistake/damage.

I was panic buying some weird wenger knives and was searching for some fishing style ones. The file looked unusual so I got it.
I wish it had a fish graphic on the scales like the other normal ones.

My Orvis Catch and Release (left) has the bright polished notch at the end. The standard Catch and Release has the notch coated with abrasive. The Troller and Angler (right) simply have the hook sharpening groove. So it looks like your uncoated notch isn't a flaw. However I have no idea what its used for.

About half the fishing knives I have have a fly lure on the handle, about half are plain.

There are numerous fishing & fly tying knots that require sliding through various loops and the groove helps getting past and through the loops. I used a pair of slightly curved forceps cause am such a noob at knots. There are a few basic knots for tying lures, swivels, and line splicing that the groove really helps.

Preferred forceps as could also cheat and hold the fly body with the eye up and open. Gave a bit more room for the larger loop-throughs. Could lay a backing line down in the forceps too, then wrap a leader around that. The groove was of immerse help.

Back in my fly fishing days, or prior, we didn't have the internet.  :D

Nice pics.  Would you like to upload those last 2 to the Wiki's 85mm Wenger Tool gallery, but trim the white space down on the close up, make it narrow like the last one and then it can be included full size on the detail page for this file.

If you like I will trim and upload them for you.

I have never put anything on Sakwiki so I will be happy if you do it.

I am attaching 4 pictures without watermarks for your use. There is a blue W on the box after the Wenger name and the cross which I assume was used at the time or denotes a fishing model.

Thanks!  I'm pretty sure the blue W on the Wenger logo was just their regular box logo at the time and didn't denote any special model or series.  Wenger has used the blue W on several different packagings. It is possible the Cross+blue W is a European logo rather than a US Logo.  Maybe Karl who likely has more Wenger boxes as an idea.  I have a Troller in original box without the blue logo.

It would have been OK to retain your small watermark. I'd just note in the description "used with permission".  People steal photos off the wiki all the time for their photogalleries or auction photos. I hate it when ebay dealers do it, because ebay makes it a pain in the butt to prove it's your photo now.

I also think the box may not date the same as the knife, there is a good chance they just used the box they had when they shipped it out of inventory.

Here is a comparison of the groove, coated and uncoated based on Karl's image.  It's  a bit small after being cut down to the essentials.
