Please Syph, what is the mystery tool? I can't stand the suspense! :ahhh

I was hoping he'd have the parts cut this week, but looks like I'll have to wait until next week.  Boy this will be a let down if they don't turn out! :D  I'll show what I made anyhow though.

Can't wait, even though I've seen your design drawings :)

When doing the phillips-across-from-two-tools mod, do the opener layer springs need to be modded to accommodate the phillips?

Nope.  One just needs to be flipped around.

Ok, bear with me here. I'm new to this. No matter which way I swap the spring, I can't get it to work with the phillips. And if I could, the spring would stick out past the bottom of the scale. Do I need to mod the phillips? Or do I have the wrong Phillips?

Yes I believe you'll need to grind the lugs off the Phillips.

Is that a 91mm?

The Phillips is from a 91mm. It's going in a 93mm project.

Thanks. Anyone else care to confirm before I totally ruin this phillips driver?  :D

The lobster is right. Basically, you need to make the tang of the philips driver a similar size to the one on the cap lifter. You can adjust the angle of each face as well as the perpendicular distance from the pivot to change the angle of the driver relative to the spring, and you can change the radius of the corners to make it easier to open/close.

Make sure you leave enough material on to keep the snap and to ensure it doesn't drop too far into the knife when closed but take enough off that it's not too difficult to open and close.

Take it steady - easy to take too much off, difficult to put it back on again. ;)

This one was interesting as it's a bladeless model.

I wanted to use the metal file backspring in the blade layer so I could use the phillips on the backside.  The only problem is the metal file layer is thinner by 0.015" than the blade layer.  So what I did was to mill off that much material from the flat pivot area of the phillips driver and it fit like a dream!  :D

Syph - The "lock" on the main blade on the 93mm feels so much stronger then on the 91mm, and I've assumed this is largely because there is no back tool.

So now that you're able to put the cutout tools on other layers, is there a no-back tool spring that can be used with the main blade on the 91mm? Am I overstating the affect that the back tool has on the lock?

Nope there are no, no back tool blade backsprings that I know of.  The main reason for the 93mm feel is significantly thicker and stronger backsprings than the 91s.  At least thats what I think, but the shape probably plays a role too.

Ive been using up my left over bits and parts and this one was to use up a set of farmer BO'd parts.  I put on textured Ti scales and it kinds of gives it a diamond plate like feel.

Bob,

we had a few email exchanges, but I'm so far off from knowing what I want exactly, I'm not going to further take your time with emails about quotes. I had seen your thread on bladeforums, but only yesterday found this more elaborate one. I went through the last 25 pages and man you are a wizard! I prefer the 93 mm SAK's myself, but everything looks so good.

Anyway, in another thread someone challenged me to do my own mod. So I got the idea to buy a swisschamp and put together several different configurations over the course of a year and see what I really want/need in an EDC.

So to the question: when you make 91 mm SAK's with cellidor scales, do you use the same screw type pivots as on the 93 mm SAK's? Or do you peen them?

Main question is, do you have a source for the bushes? I fear that I might damage them with the drilling.

Totally unrelated question. You said the combo tool is too thin to be a good pry tool. So what's the better pry tool, the 93 mm inline awl or the cap lifter?

Finally, I'd also like to see the bit driver on 93 mm SAK's but without the bit holder. That with the two saws and the pliers in a sheath with a couple of large bit holders, would be nice for when I'm out of office in the field or doing chores at home. So not an EDC, but a small tool chest for when you don't know what the day will bring.
Rockin' a Huntsman!

Hi, yes I peen the regular cellidor ones and sometimes the bushing do get damaged, or in my case more often lost.  I have hundreds of spares now though from years of taking SAKs apart.  If you need any you are welcome to have some for cost of shipping, which I would think is just the cost of an international letter.

The 93mm caplifter is for sure the best pry tool of the standard components.  It will bend too, but it takes alot of force.  :D

I have a cybertool bit driver that has no bit holder with it or bits.  I got that from a used CT model ages ago and the driver was the only part worth salvaging.  Id always intended to put that on a 93mm SAK but just never got around to it.

My dream SAK keeps changing but if I had to decide right now, it would be similar to a Swisschamp with added Electrician blade. I've always admired that blade and know I would find it extremely useful. I also have occassion to work in my yard and might benefit from a pruner blade as well. Oh the possibilities  :ahhh :ahhh :D

Question: on a normal scaled 91mm sak, can the inline phillips be opposite side of both the can opener and bottle opener? For example with the explorer removing the mag glass and putting the two openers in its place? I'm sorry if this has been answered already, I think it's been hinted at, but not directly asked. Thanks

No. The springs are different so the possibility will not work.
