Touch Screen SUCKS
on: February 05, 2012, 03:47:18 AM
Well my blackberry is on its last leg so I got a droid off my sister tonight. She had only used it about a month and then bought an iphone. Well I called an activated it ect ect and less then an hour later I called back. I HATE touch screen! I turned my old BB back on and ordered a new one that was just released 1-19-12 so I'm awaiting a new phone. I sure hope they never make all phones touch screen I HATE them!

RANT over.  :D

So I take it you don't like touch screen that much?  :D

What do you not like about them? Besides the fingerprint smudges.

It's not bad once you get used to it. Rotate the phone and typing in portrait mode helps too.

Yup, I always type in landscape- it's the only way to do it effectively.  Still, if you are used to buttons/keys, it's hard to convert.  I recently got my wife a Droid 3 XT860 because I figured she wouldn't be able to do without a keyboard.

It doesn't really matter though- Blackberry is going to be Android soon anyway.

You sound like me at work, I HATE touch only devices and complain about them quite a bit.  I have huge thumbs that are typically the width of 2 onscreen keys and I just find them frustrating.  I hate debugging on all touch devices, hate using them... I need a proper keyboard to type at a decent pace.

I far prefer a touchscreen over microscopic buttons.

I've also found typing on android (numerous different phones with differing screen sizes) to be excruciating compared to my iPhone. Something just doesn't feel right about the way they respond.

My problem. Whatever button I touched, I touched the one beside also.

I actually don't mind the touchscreen.  I was used to the iPhone using two thumbs in portrait mode was most like real keys except of course no tactile feedback.

I discovered the swype capabilities on my atrix and now there's no looking back.  If needed I can type one ' thumbed'.

I tried the Swype and it worked well enough but I couldn't quite get past my desire to hit keys instead of gloss over them.  One of these days I'll try it again.

Even though the iphone screens are physically smaller than most droid based screens, they have a greater pixel depth and are more precise.  The screens they have have a higher density of the little things in them that sense your fingertips.  I've seen tests of screen accuracy and acuity and the iphone beats the pants off of every single droid based phone on the market.

I prefer typing in landscape mode because I can use both thumbs at the same time, though I tend to make more errors that way compared to a single index finger in portrait mode.

Perhaps, but the screen accuracy is moot for those of us with big thumbs.  :D The kids I see on bus can type faster on their keypad than I can on the touchscreen, of course seeing auto correct giving me some ridiculous words and have to backspace all the way to fix it doesn't help either.

I had a Samsung touch screen (non-android) phone before I got my Motorola Defy, and I prefer touch screen phones... I had to send my Defy in for repairs after a firmware update gone wrong, and they loaned me an older blackberry... what a hunk of garbage... never again!

My wife now uses my old Samsung and likes it a lot better for texting... and she does the landscape mode thing too...

Having recently gotten a Galaxy Ace, I have to say I really don't find the touch screen bad at all, intuitive even. :tu:  As others said having it in landscape really helps and my two thumb typing really isn't that bad. :)

I actually find it easier to type on the touch screen compared to the tiny keys of a BlackBerry. I also have big thumbs and find I'm much more accurate using a touch screen.
One good thing with Android is if you don't like the keyboard you are using, just download another one :)

Call me crazy but.......use your cell phone as a phone and not a computer and the whole keyboard thing becomes moot! Just a thought.

Believe it or not, there are huge studies regarding human interface models and, as expected, there's no silver bullet about it.

The big advantage of the touchscreen is that it allows the screen to occupy almost all usable device's surface and adjust its interface to the end you want. So while you have some little keys you miss all the time when texting, you have those huge boxes to answer, reject or make a phone call.

Most people's complains about touchscreens are related with the keyboard, but using it might not be where you spend most of your time.

Another curious situation of touchscreen vs hard keys is on car consoles (gps, multimedia, and so on). While touchscreen is generally considered more usable -- you get what you want faster -- hard keys are considered more "safer", in the sense you shift less focus from the driving using hard keys than looking up where to touch. This is the reason why BMW never went touchscreen (their i-drive is hard-keys based), while other brands like Lexus/Toyota favour the touchscreen.

As a hardcore Blackberry crackhead for 10 year, I recently migrated to a touch screen: a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

For me, it has been a major - and positive - paradigm shift in the right direction.  And leaves me wondering why I didn't make the leap 5 years ago.

I understand how the touch screen is not for everyone.  Thats groovy.  But for me, and when everything is taken into account, including real internet functionality that was lacking on the Blackberry, Android and its siblings are the only way to go.  And that does not take into account that fewer outside vendors and apps are supporting Blackberry.  I can watch Netflix and Slingbox (home tv) on my Skyrocket, but they weren't supported on the Blackberry.  I honestly believe that unless Blackberry experiences its own paradigm shift in the near future, it will find itself on the ash heap of history right between the Palm Pilot and the Polaroid instant camera.

I recognize that one's dislike of the touchscreen can override everything else thats good about Android, iPhone, etc.  But it just seems to me that the train has left the station, and the technology and trends are headed away from Blackberry and other button interfaces.  JMO.  :)

I love my iphone screen.  I actually learned to type better on the smaller keyboard than the portrait one.  I don't really like portrait any more.

My first smartphone was a BB Curve, and before that I had an LG ENV2 with a perfect keyboard.  Adjusting to all touch took some time but I really dig my iphone now.  I want to switch back to droid next year, but so far I like the iphone graphics much better.

I love my iPhone. In case you can't figure it out I also use a stylus I made. Modded of course :p. It works fantastic and I actually type faster on my phone because of autocorrect. :p
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?
