On a fixed head plier tool kick!
on: February 22, 2012, 03:00:46 AM
Apparently I am on a fixed plier head kick since I just posted SOG ToolClip knockoff pics and shots of a red CRKT Zilla and now I am into one of the other understated multitools on the marker- the Kutmaster MultiMaster.

I don't know why these aren't more common- they have just about everything going for them.  They are USA made, they are bullet proof, they are locking.... oh yeah, and a solid fixed head plier and 1/4" hex bit adaptor so you can carry whatever bits you want/need.  Not enough?  How about it being available for less than $40.  How's that for getting your attention?  :D

A slight drawback is that some of the rather large cutting jaws are covered by the overlaps of the handle.  It would be pretty easy for them to fix it as this extra hunk of steel is just there for aesthetics and could be cut back to reveal more of the cutters if one really wanted.

One of my favorite sayings is "If it's stupid but it works, it's not stupid."  Well, that theory is proven here- the lock function is so simple it borders on really, really stupid, but it works beautifully and, because it's so simplistic, it works better than any other lock on the market.  It's certainly not stupid.

The only other real major drawback to this one is the stubby goodies inside.  The knife is ok, but I prefer a nice long draw on a saw, and this simply doesn't have it.

Overall I really like this tool.  The sheath is crap and if you want to get one of these bad boys make sure you also order an aftermarket sheath as the one that comes with it seems like it was made out of someone's old socks.  It's floppier than a *insert missing Smurfpills joke here* although it smells slightly better.  Anyway, read my full review HERE and note that I had yet to take pictures of it then.  Now that I finally have, maybe I'll see about getting it and some other reviews moved to the Main Site where they belong.

It's also available with a needle nose too if you prefer.  I like the blunt nose myself.

No, I wish more mutitools came blunt nosed. Especially the big ones. I find them much more useful than needle nose. Recently I had a rew instances when I had to go get regular pliers out of the workshop although I had a Wave on me at the time. :ahhh

Are you sure that's a knockoff?  There is another version of the Multimaster that looks very much like that and is made in China.

I also like blunt nosed pliers, and it's sad that there are so few available.

Well the needle nose is the reason they can fit longer implements in there, if you go with blunt nose you'll end up with those stubby parts Gerber is known for.

I believe it does.  It's listed as having a significant number of additional features over the standard US made model.

I seem to be adding a few photos to your postings lately def. Hope you don't mind.

I only have two examples, one of each of these interesting and worthy designs. Much like you, I also have a fondness for fixed head MTs. There appears to be some sligh cosmetic differences betwwn our examples at that.

The Kutmaster 17 function Multimaster on top, and the 34 function Wrench Head on the bottom.

Interestingly enough, the Multimaster is found on various sections of Kutmasters web page, under various product placement names, but the Wrench Head is found only in the Kutmaster Emergency tool section...this leads me to believe that possibly, the Wrench Head may be on its way out. It definitely is no longer shown in the CAT section, which my example comes from.

Wrench Head shots.

Multimaster shots.

I believe Travis would be happy to order you one.  They aren't really sold in a lot of places, but my guess is since many of them are marked with the Cat logo then they may be available through Cat stores and other workwear outlets.

That's just a guess though- I don't recall ever seeing these for sale anywhere, much like Bear Jaws tools.

Yes, it is, all came in a rather large sheath, more pics :tu:
Shown here with a Fuse and Side Clip.

Its going in my tool box, quite handy for tinkering around the house and car.

On board standard size bits, only seen that on Wenger before.

Can be used with or without the bit adapter.
Dear multitool makers, please use standard size bits :pok:

Handle folds to form a T-handle for extra leverage, quite useful.

Bit adapter, for extra reach.

Ruler, inches and centimetres.

Wrench cut outs.

This tool, well what is it

I like the two chiselled edges, adds another use to the file.

Oddly enough, I only bought it for the sockets and bits.

Surprised how much stuff fits in, still some space left.

Lots of pockets, not quite as nice as one of Metro's Skinths.

All packs away into the jumbo sheath, this one branded 'SKIL'.

I believe blade with the decimal markings is a spark plug type gauge, but I can't be sure, because there is no profile view.

So how many folks actually have one of these?  I am wondering if maybe they aren't too common (and the price is right) we should see if we can talk Travis into doing a Multitool.org run?  :D

Grant, the reason why I don't have one is because the ones I've seen have either been the CAT-brand ones (at a TJ Maxx), and the ones that SMKW has under the Winchester brand, for an absurd $80. :/  I've found them hard to find, and either of dubious branding, or smurfsmurf pricing. :/

Actually, here in NC it's "only" 7%; even 10% is hard to swallow.  It makes SMKW and Sevierville just that much more expensive. :/
