MP450?
on: April 05, 2012, 06:35:58 PM
So, I have an MP450 on the way which I got in a trade.

I can't find anything on it. No videos, no reviews, nothing.

So, how does it differ from the MP400?

Also, I've seen a few references to it on these boards, so for those of you who have one, what's your opinion of it?

Thanks in advance.

Also, I bought a set for a friend of the mini-suspensions, which I think are good keychain size tools, but this is my first Gerber for myself.

I had an MP450 that I picked up for cheap a couple years back. It's a good little tool; as far as I could tell it was just a slightly shorter MP600. I gave it to a friend who had her military-issue MP600 lifted. She seems to have been pretty happy with it.

The MP400 has scissors while the MP450 has a file in place of scissors and a different shape main blade :tu:

The MP450, huh?  I'm vaguely familiar with it..... :D  If I'm carrying a pliers-based MT, chances are it's the 450.  The main difference between the 400 and 450 is that the 450 has a file instead of the scissors.  I got mine in a trade here for a LM Freestyle, and it's probably the best trade I've made.  It's nice and compact, but rugged, with decent pliers and drivers.  the OHO pliers are great, and addictive  ::).  No OHO tools are not a deal breaker for me, as a lefty OHO tools are more of a pain than anything, especially blades.  I just wish it had the replaceable cutters like my MP600s, but wire cutters are not too important to me every day.  Jut watch it - Gerber slide head tools have a tendancy to multiply like rabbits.  I have 6 of them now.........

MP450, file but no scissors and different shape blade.

MP400, scissors but no file has standard blade shape.

What's this attached to my belt?  Why, it's a MP450! :o :D

As others have said it's the one with a file but no scissors.  I will point out that the MP400 (at least) has had both blade types; as seen in Dunc's thread here.  Now whether or not the MP450 has had both blade types I'm not so sure.

Good point Gareth, I forgot the later MP400 has that different shape blade ( I know its got a proper name, is it Sheepfoot or Wharncliffe blade  ) :tu:

That might explain it. Here is the only picture I could find. It does not show any of the tools but figured I would post it anyways.

Hi Capt'n, did yours have the file  if not it does sound like a MP400 later model like in the thread Gareth posted.

To be honest i'm not sure if it has a file as I never used it. I do know it has scissors though. Did they make a 400 or 450 with scissors and a file?

Lynn I am truly sorry for the confusion on the model. If its an issue I will make it right.  :salute:

It's cool either way Cap.

I was mostly interested in the plier design, and I won't sweat if it comes with scissors or file. And both of the blade designs pictured above are fine with me.

EDIT: Remember, I had to start a thread to even find out what it was, so... yeah... not too concerned. :D

That plier design is quite addicting.  :)  I know for a fact it has Scissors I just do not remember if it has a file as well. If they never offered a model with both than I assume it is a MP400.

@Capt'n and Lynn, had a good gander at that pic, I'd say its an MP400 with the Wharncliffe blade and no file, same as this one :tu:

Okay... so... never mind. I can find plenty of reviews on the MP400. Nothing to see here, move along!  :D

So... I have an MP400 on the way. Thoughts? :D

Also, they're issuing the MP600 to military folks? I think I saw something in a Nutnfancy video where he mentioned it coming with a vest or something (body armor maybe?). Yeah, I know some folks have issues with him. I can get past it and appreciate the level of detail in his reviews, even if I don't always agree with him.

Oh look, what's this sitting right beside me?  Why, it's an MP400! :o

 :D

Badwolf's right, no doubt about it, that's an MP400 you've got coming.  One if the inconsequential differences between the two of them is that the components are installed in rather different orders.  So the fact I can see a can opener next to the 'Gerber USA' stamp means it's definitely a MP400, if it was a MP450 you would see the phillips head 'driver.

In all honestly they are both good MT's IMO.  The scissors aren't the most delicate out there for detail work, but they are tough little things and cut very well. :tu:

My thoughts exactly. I personally have no problem with him, but some people do. To those of you who hate him I challenge you to put out a better review video of your favorite MT or SAK.  :D

I saw a video talking about the plastic molle attachment on the back of the sheath. You having any problem with that?

Also... Oooohhhhh.... Replaceable cutting heads on the pliers. that seems to be a 'thing' on the larger tools these days. Nice, if they keep making the replacement blades.

Nope, never had a problem with the molle attachment.  I actually don't own that exact tool anymore, I traded it to Mercury here for another BO MP600.  The one pictured above was in such beautiful shape I felt it would be a shame to use it.  The ones I have now are still in great shape, but users. :)  Besides, it was Merc's MP450 I got, and a felt a bit sorry for him....... ::)  As for the replaceable cutters, if I ever wear a set out, I'll let you know how swapping them goes. :P

Note that the blades there are triangular in shape. So when they are dulled/damaged, you loosen the screw, rotate the blade 120°, and you're good to go again. Each set of wire cutter blades is good for three tours of duty.  :D

I noticed they were triangular, but couldn't tell for sure if they had three edges. Good in a way, but it means the whole force applied to them gets put on the screw holding them in place, and the two 'unused' cutting edges. I'm curious how well that works in practice.

Wohoo! The MP400 is here! Let the obsessive plier flicking begin.

Worse than that, they came in a box with bubble-wrap!

I'm the best at what I do, and what I do is (snict!)... extend pliers! :D
Okay, maybe funnier if you're an X-Men fan.
