I think some peeps modded them to fit legal requirements.

I have also seem others on BB which were legal - can't remember the makes off hand, some might have been from makers there. Talk to Tony - I think he's got a couple ;)

Maybe...:D

I just love the way you can use a friction folder without having to be worried about it closing on your fingers, and would like to have a slightly more compact edc-able one :)

Hi There,

I don't think you'll find a better friction folder for the price than the ones made by Michael Morris:

http://www.michaelmorrisknives.com/

You can often find one for sale on BB, or Michael will deal direct.

UK eBay blocks up Brits buying anything that cuts.  ::)

But those type of Higonokami are available in the UK. I keep meaning to buy one. There was a UK webstore that sold them at a good price, I'll have to look again.....

Found it - out of stock. But they do have this - http://www.niwaki.com/store/higo/

I like that....

..forgot about that..

I am sure it is for your own safety   :police:

:tu:

On the plus side, you can still talk about them in the UK:

A pretty good post about them.

EDIT: Added a picture: The smaller one should be UK legal.

That little one looks like it might fit the bill :)

I'm quite disapointed at how few there are out there really :(

It'd be nice to be able to get one in decent steel, otherwise there's little point pairing one with a sak imo :-\

The steel is fine but it is not SS. I have not seen any SS ones on sale, but I have not actively looked for them.
Generally you pay more for better steel, brass etc:

from eBay:

•The most famous Japanese traditional pocket knives.
What Nagao produced is only genuine HIGONOKAMI.
Higonokami is his registered trade mark in Japan.
JUST Nagao produced is called as HIGONOKAMI in japan.
You know there are many imitation.
Sir. Motosuke Nagao is 4th generation of Kanekoma factory.

There are featured Higonokami regular products.  Please select from them.

•White steel, and blue steel Higo folding knives are packed individual carton only.
Other economic students models are packed vinyl.

S55C full steel

Eco model. Suit for pupil, children, don't claim about quality.

Nickel silver case, SK steel laminated

Silver bright case. 3 layer regular class.

Brass case, Blue steel #2 laminated

Gold case. 3 layer hi-class. Well forged.

Anyone interested in higo no kami knives, I found a nice example of a higo no kami knife at http://www.metalmaster-ww.com/product-list/15

Couteaux Berthier also sell a range of higo no kami type knives, which are very well made and are very, very sharp from new.  Techically, they're not a higo no kami knife proper beause they're not made by people in the higo no kami cutlers' guild (which I think has very few members in it now).  Anyone interested in twentieth century Japanese cutlery politics can find the background to this online, presented by people with far more knowledge of the subject than I have.

The higo no kami knives mentioned in this thread are called, I believe, higo naifu although they always seem to be sold as higo no kami knives.  They're said to be of better quality than the surviving guild member made higo no kani knives but they haven't got the same character.  Both make a good choice for someone who wants to try a friction folder but I feel more comfortable with the higo no kami from metaimaster because it's a slightly shorter blade that's (more) clearly within the UK legal carry limit.

Changing the subject, there's a range of friction folders that are easily available in the UK, the land of quaint knife carry laws .  The Opinel models 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all friction folders that tend to get overlooked I think and shouldn't be.
