Ok, let's here it who EDC a yo-yo
on: November 20, 2012, 04:57:56 PM
Ok, who carrys a yoyo? Out of over 4,000 people on this forum there's got to be a few,, I used to yoyo 20yrs ago, so it's been a while. My son came home from school the other day with one from his donation, and he asked me if I knew how to, so I showed him a few trick and his jaw dropped, now grant it, it was a cheap yoyo, so things were limited.. I looked on the comp for a update to tricks that can be done, then my jaw dropped, I'm soooo out of date. But I started thinking, a yoyo is small, it's doesn't weigh much, and cheap, what if you were to EDC one to keep busy whenever you have down time? After you buy a one for oh $15 up keep is only strings, and now oil due to now having ball bearings! I hate being bored, and down time! So I fig, if I can get back into the swing of things, lol, and carried one every where I went, it would give me something to do, and the possibiltys are endless! So what's your thoughts? And if you carry one, what is it? JR.

Love me some yo-yo action when I have nothing better to do. I do keep one in my bag and almost had it confiscated by TSA more than once.

wow really? That sucks, it's only a toy, on the other hand people have been shot by police officers over a plastic toy cap gun, I guess you can say we're just dumb enough to do stupid things with them  although there was a tv show were a killer carried a yoyo, but replaced the string with piano wire, so to the naked eye just a simple toy, but piano wire is so strong, he made it a pro strangling tool,, JR

That's the first one I ever owned, the yomega brain, back when it first came out and sharper image was selling them, oh in 89-90? I think it was invented in 86, but I thought it was sooo kool, mine was all clear, then I moved on to a plain simple one, now they have freaking ball bearings to give them a normal spin time of two min, I think the longest spin time is 13min! Heck ill settle of the two, I was lucky if I ever got 30sec in order to do my tricks before having to unsleep them! JR

Every now and then I think of getting a decent one, but the good ones aren't cheap!

I was about 22 years old before I figured yoyo's out....

I spoke to a few people and they said some of the most decent and advanced ones aren't that expensive! Like $10, then if you get really into, then move on and up like $20-100 and up, we even have a yoyo manufacturer on our forum! He makes metal ones,, JR

It's funny you mention it as I just found one of my old Yo-Yo's a few days ago. The string literally has 6-7 knots in it that are almost impossible to get out so I am just going to buy a new string. It is a Yomega X-Brain. I remember having a Fireball and a few Duncan's as well. I might have to see if I can find them.   :tu:

I never really considered yo yos as something that you could do tricks with until I saw the Yo-Yo Man!  Tom is funny as heck to watch, and like I said, he may not be the greatest at yo yo tricks, but he puts on a heck of a show that always makes me smile!

That he is, he was basically the one who invented the tricks, at least that's the way I took it. Not a bad little thing to get into, if you have time! Or if you have to much of it! $20 will get you started with a real good one(as I was told) but then upkeep is only a few$$, heck $10 will get you100 strings shipping included, and you just need a little tube of oil, $10 for a new bearing and a tube of oil. And even if you had two or three yoyos, it's not like you can't use the same strings, or oil, the bearings are the only that aren't the same(but most are) so if you had to buy one bearing, a pack of string, and new lube each year, that's only $20 for upkeep on a hobby, that ain't so bad no? Heck put a change jar on your dresser, I'm sure there would be more then $40 in a year, if you put a quarter in the jar every M-F, that will get you $65, so get a new yoyo each year with the upkeep! That's why I figured it would be something to get back into being on a tight income! That is if I can even attempt these new tricks now a days, don't get me wrong, I can still do some of the things I used to be able to do, but I ain't in my teens anymore! Lol!! JR

me neither, grant it, that brain yoyo was fancy, but no bearings, you were lucky if you got 20-30secs of spin time, do a quick trick and get it back down before it took your finger off, but heck now on avg, these bearing ones do two min! Dang, that's like four tricks, I think the record is 13min of spin! I've never seen one, that's why I put the post out to see who knows what? JR

I never got that kind of spin time.  I was lucky if I got ten seconds, but then I only had novelty yo yos from the end caps of the grocery store.

I'm looking at a few on eBay now.  Some have some very interesting prices but it's a bit frustrating that US based sellers feel they need to rape international buyers.  I have seen a few where the yo yo is $20 plus $32 shipping.   ::)

$20 + $30 shipping :o wow, but your also up in Canada too. So of course it's going to more exspencive for shipping, but I didn't think that much! Dang, what about amazon? I know they have a few good ones but I don't know how it works for up there? A couple that I were told were good are the Duncan pro z, yoyo factory velocity, or the classic by yoyo jam, all under $20, all bearings, but the pro z and velocity will play both sides of the fence, being responcive or unresponcive, meaning if you throw it and it sleeps but if you bounce it will it come back up, but you need to get your basics down solid before you move on to what they call binding in order to return it to your hand, for a better idea of whats new and all the tricks go here, www.yotricks.com he'll give you good info! He also sells yoyos, and it's free shipping on $35 out of states,, JR

I hate you smurfers!

I edc'd a PowerYo Phantom for a while a few years ago,til security at work started taking too much attention(cant blame them giving that I work in a toy shop). The other main reason I stopped was I was just getting out tricked

Back in SA I went throughphases of EDCing a Russell(remeber Coke brought them out every few years?)http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-1980S-RUSSELL-SPINNER-SUPER-COCA-COLA-COKE-YO-YO-ALL-ORIGINAL-/110978496714?pt=UK_Toys_Creative_Educational_RL&hash=item19d6d578ca

At my previous toy shop we had 2 of these:http://www.amazon.co.uk/Duncan-3542XP-Bumble-Bee-Yo-Yo/dp/B0006MWMZI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=ZR7C3IPPHM2B&coliid=IPD0NPLVK3A5V

When we we're told we were being closed,I thought smurf it,and opened one(over ten years ago,and they were £14 then!).It was just awesome! You could put into sleepers that just went on for ever, and suddenly I could do tricks I never could with Russels!
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

Not something I ever got into. I owned a couple of cheap crappy ones as a kid, but never managed any tricks with them. I just made them go down and back up again, which I got bored with after about the fifth time. A few years later my brother got one - a better one, and managed to learn a couple of tricks before smashing somehow  :D I did have a go with it before he broke it, but my only advancement was to get it to stop down till I wanted it to come back. I got bored after about the fifth time of that too

You don't ship much out of the country do you?  :P

Shipping out of the US isn't that expensive.  Some US sellers have it in their minds that everyone outside of the US is a lying scum sucker that will take them for everything they are worth by claiming packages never arrived.  Because of that they either don't ship outside the US or they charge extra for insurance, delivery confirmation, then add the drama charge.  I have had some sellers quote me $25 and more for a Victorinox Pioneer, and I have gotten them from Tim for less than a dollar's shipping.

Just for the record, shipping from Hong Kong and China (which are a lot further than the US) is usually so cheap it's added into the price.  I rarely pay more than $2 for shipping from China and less than $5 from places like Australia or Europe.

Yeah, as much as I hate buying from China on eBay or the likes, I won't spend 10+ times the shipping cost to get it from the US.  I usually get my items from China faster than the US also!

I'm going to have a look for yoyos today.  Not sure if I'll buy one, but we'll see.  :D

No I've only shipped out of the US once and that was to Australia, an heck that was $20 for a shoebox, I take that back I shipped a package,a very BIG package to a old classmate who was over seas at the time, but you don't have to pay that charge, the service takes care of that part, since they traffic there own stuff, you just have to ship it to there station. shipping to china shouldn't be much do to all the traffic, shipping is all about traffic! heck even I can look over to you guys, but to get a car over, forget it, it's all due to traffic! Shipping to Alaska even though its still US, and even attached, there's no traffic, and the price skyrockets, there's so much traffic from here to china, eventhough there not attached, the price goes down.. Even for me to ship a package to my niece who's two states over it was, err I think $8 and it wasn't much, and I didn't do anything special, just a simple shipment, no must sign, insurance, stuff.. But still for a simple freaking yoyo, it's not like it a loaded toolbox, although if I wanted to overnight it, then it would cost more then shipping the toolbox!  JR
Ill even give you the dumbest situation, were sending out Xmas cards, and at the time the town we lived in we didn't have mailboxes, everyone had to get a box at the po. I asked the lady if she could put the card in suchs box and she said no, I have to put a stamp on it! For my freaking neighbor? So I said screw it when I walked home, I stopped at there house and put the letter on there porch then turned around and walked 120ft onto my porch! JR

Just for the record, shipping from Hong Kong and China (which are a lot further than the US) is usually so cheap it's added into the price.  I rarely pay more than $2 for shipping from China and less than $5 from places like Australia or Europe.

JR
