Gave in and bought myself an Opinel Outdoor, and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised  :).

Needs some sharpening but I like it :)
It's stiff, light, and feels good in the hand. Like all opinels, and unlike "rectangular" pocket knives hehe.

Thanks to a generous member of the forum, I now own a No 8. I like the looks of this one also but I'm not a CE kind of guy. I know they have their place in life but just not my place. BTW Mat, my paring knife is holding up nicely, no dishwasher action though.

These blades all have a little bit of carbon, they're not "pure inox" (ie stainless steel, or steel w/ chrome); these will rust just a little if left in wet areas for a while. nothing a swipe of a tissue wont get rid of.

Some opinels have the "carbon blade" instead of the "inox" blade (sandvik), those will actually rust easily.

I had opinels from about 30 years. Never had a problem with the rust, but it *does* and will happen in some conditions, specially if i leave it wet in the kitchen for a month (i use a no 6 inox blade opinel for kitchen related tasks, so when going in holidays this happened sometimes)

I believe this happens a lot more easily on the wood handle opinels because it retains the water a long time. Regular stainless steel knives generally also aren't pure stainless steel for sharpening purposes, and rust less easily, just because the handle is plastic or metal.

I've been waiting for the plain edge version myself, but I just couldn't wait anymore ...  :wait:

The whistle is quite loud (+ 110 decibels apparently), loud enough to get the attention of the dog (and the kids  ;)) when we're taking a walk and they go wandering off too far ...

Yeah, if they had a PE version, I'd probably buy one ASAP.  I guess CE isn't bad for a knife marketed for outdoor use though, just I'd rather not have it that way.

yeah the whistle works just fine. i like that it has no ball inside.
on a side note, i got mine from knivecenter as it's cheaper than elsewhere ($22), but it had some "preowned" traces and the ring is stiffer than it should be. Too lazy to return tho - I guess they planned on that hehe.

Hopefully it arrives in the mail in a few days.

$31 shipping included. Shipping from knifecenter to Norway is very expencive. Shipping from knifecenter for the opinel is over $15.

Just got my OPinel Outdoor the other day. Its a very good knife, but it would have been better with a PE, or atleast the serrations ground the other way.
I took it with me skiing the on saturday. The whistle might come in handy if I fall and get injured and need help. (Im not exactly the worlds greates skiier  ::)
Anyway, heres a pic of it I took with my cellphone.
