Any info on this old knife?
on: July 01, 2013, 09:37:50 PM
This was my grandfather's old pocket knife- apparently he used it in the garden.  I think it's a beautiful old knife in it's own right, but given that it was my grandfather's EDC it is that much more of interest to me.

It's at my father's place right now, but he is holding it for me.

First thought to me was it looked like an old sailors knife, you know the single blade made for cutting rope. However after looking a little more I noticed the curve of the handle and I figure it was an old hawk-bill that has had its bill sharpened off. Not sure of the brand name.

I believe it says Maclellan Bulldog if that helps.

That would explain why he used it when gardening then!

The handle does certainly look like an Ettrick style which (over here) usually has a wharncliffe or pruner blade (same curved handle). I'd imagine this started off life as a pruner blade too. Bulldog seems to have been a tagline for US and German firms I think  so that's not helping me, and as for the tang stamp, the only P&W MacLellan that Google is throwing at me is a Glaswegian construction company.

Nice looking knife, and looks like it's got plenty of years life left in it yet  :salute:

That style seems very popular from the glory days of Sheffield.
