Recommend a folder?
on: July 10, 2013, 08:38:25 PM
Im fairly new here but you guys have been crazy helpful so far so naturally I turn here for help. So im looking for a folding knife for everyday carry. I need it to be assisted opening, blade over 3", and reasonably priced. I was looking on blade hq but im offically overwhelmed so I turn here for the experience that is present :salute:. Thank for your help and stories in advance

Oh and im looking at the kershaw bur.....so thoughts on that also :pok: :D
I would rather be judged by 12 then carried by 6.

My choice is the SOG Twitch XL.  I have carried a Twitch XL for over 2 years and it carries low in pocket if you use the pocket clip and it opens in an instant.  It also has a safety that locks it closed or open.

SOG now has a Twitch XL with Driftwood handles that I would like since it is slightly lighter than my older Twitch XL.  There are also several blade shapes available.

I am not a folder collector and just have a few for my needs. I never got any tactical blade with exotic steel and high price. Most of them would emparass me if somebody would see me carrying one. So I looked for higly effective blades with a peaceful look. I would recomend two different options.
1. A 8cm Opinel. Do I need to say anything about these formidable knives? None is considered OHO but all open easily this way  because there is no spring. The easiest is the Outdoor model, because of the shackle opener. I also tried the classic yatagan blades but  my favourite is the  Jardin with a great full flat ground spearpoint blade that shines. It looks very utility, nobody is scared, yet it is sharp, penetrative, one hand opening,  locking (opened and closed!), with great ergonomy (cylindrical handle), made from nice steel and wood, can be easily modified to non locking, can be carved, can be forced with patina, is light as a feather, has a lot of  history behind and it is so cheap that  it is unbelievable.
2. A Spyderco. More expensive but still ingenius knives. Most  of them look very utility and not agressive (especially with those bright colors on the reinforced plastic scales), but even a small Ladybug can cut a carotid in fraction of a second, so be very careful. You won't hear people screaming when you present it. A  Delica is recommended (my  Endura is quite big).

Of course you  might want something camo-  black oxide-  tanto- manly- heavy-  agressive looking "tactical" knife, one a Ranger or a Marine would choose.  I  can't help  you with that.

You need at least one Oppie, its kinda a forum rule.

Opinel are really the masters of less is more, and Thier knives are a damn sight better than many three or four times the price!

Does help Ford though...

Although not assisted opening, my folding Razel is a tough as nails locking folder that I love as EDC (although it is fairly wide).  Not sure if the PE version is still available though.

I like that they come in carbon steel.

I have a big brother/little brother clip point combo of  cold steels version, the TWISTMASTER.  Good Knives but I think I should have the original design they were modeled after.  Maybe if I cut my own hair this month I could justify it.

Mine has not been sharpened in 2 years of service.  I have worked it on the leather strop at the barber shop a few times.  It has AUS-8 steel that is cryogenically heat-treated to RC 57-58 so it is tough and hard.

and if it is good enough for Gregory House, MD ....

The Kershaw Blur mentioned in the OP is a great knife.  Good steel, good clip, and VERY fast AO.  :tu:  Lifetime warranty on it too.... I have two of them, one PE and one a CE tanto.  If you're looking for something a bit less tactical looking, the Leek is a great knife as well.  It's availible in lots of different colors, different handle options, frame or liner lock, etc.  I'll post some pics of these when I get home.

Camera's dead, but here's a pic I'd posted in another thread of my Blurs with a pair of Scallions.  The Leek is the in between model in the Ken Onion line, hope this helps you get an idea of the size of the Blur.  If need be I can try to get a pic with my phone.....

For what it's worth, when it comes to AO, I generally stick to Kershaw.  They were the ones that started it, and to be honest I haven't seen any others that stack up.  Mind you, I have very limited experience with more modern AO knives, but the ones I have had my hands on haven't seemed as smooth and seamless as Kershaw.

As usual, your results may vary.

Yep I agree Def. I've handled AO's by a number of different manufacturers, but none have felt as smooth and refined as Kershaws' system.

In that case I don't understand what assisted opening is. The ball bearing isn't such an assist? is AO something like automatic?

Assisted opening means there is a spring, that 'finishes' the opening for you after you open the knife the first bit. Automatic knives have a button of some sort, so this isn't really automatic, but it's not a too big difference, IMO...

Like on my kershaw leek....... you push the lip on the back on the knife blade when its closed and it jumps open and locks.....it makes oho easyer imo........but thanks for all the suggestions guys I got alot of research to do.
