A Thespian Hoplite (Battle of Thermopylae, 5th century BC) from my collection, with a Kopis, called Machaira later (4th century BC). See the similarities?
Xifos was used for penetrating, Kopis for cutting. "Κόπτω" means to cut, thus κοπίς is the cutter. "Μάχομαι" means to fight, thus μάχαιρα is the fighting knife.
In modern Greek the knife is still called μαχαίρι and the utility knife and wood cutting knife are called κοπίδι.
The Hindus fought against Greeks during Alexandrine times, so they had the opportunity to experience the functionality of the kopis (hoplite weapon) and the machaira (cavarly weapon).

Didn't Hannibal's army use a similar weapon against the Romans? and there was a variation of it in Spain as well if memory serves me right. Those case after the Hellenic culture was spread throughout Mediterranean coast.
Before Greeks, weren't there similar designs in Egypt? (this part is really sketchy in my memory)

On the other front, here is an interview with Alan Kay (winner of the first seasons of Alone) in which he talks about the usefulness of the kukri among other things

There was the Aegyptian koppesh

\

Since the name is almost identical, it is possible that Greecs loaned both the name and the idea, but they changed the design to have a straight back and the word became a full Greek one, since we still use it and we conjugate it, unlike other foreign words.

Then, since Greeks of Spain, Sicilia and Italy were always fighting with Phoenicians, Phoenicians used the Greek kopis design (and not the original koppesh), named falcata, of Iberian origin. In fact, Hannibal used mercenaries from various nationalities, and people from Hiberia (Spain) carried the falcata.

It might be that the Phoenicians got the idea from Aegyptians and Greeks from Phoenicians (as they did with the alphabet), I'm not sure, but the fact is that Alexander spread the design throughout the then known world, as far as India, before Hanibal. Romans prefered the Gladius that looked like the xiphos, the most common short sword of Greek Hoplites.

Xiphos is better used in close quarters (Spartans used an even shorter version, the xyele). The word xiphos was used by Myceneans and Homer, before kopis. It wasn't straight but curved at both sides around the upper 2/3, so it was capable of cutting hits also.

Kopis was better at open quarters, such as when chasing the enemy, used by light hoplites (peltasts) and cavalry (a longer version, the machaira).

Here, the left hunter carries a spear and a xiphos, the right one a machaira.

In this scene, the right carries a xiphos, but the left uses a double axe instead from the kopis or machaira for cutting.

This double axe, called lavris, was known in Greece from the Minoan times, as back as 3650 BC, as old as the Ancient Egypt, and this was both ceremonial and functional and what possibly they used before modifying the koppesh to the koppis.

On the other hand, it might be that some of the designs emerged indepentently, since they all are a hybrid knife/axe, both known to most civilizations. The fact is that they suvived all those millenia because they work and they are useful.

I love this history lessons.
As far as the koppesh goes, the people of Mesopotamia used something similar during the middle Assyrian period

Yes, Assyrians used a sickle sword

and Dacians (Romania), the falx, with the cutting edge inside

The root falc of falx and flacata remained in Greece. Today, we call falceta the barber's razor and sometimes the folding knife.
