Some thoughts would be appreciated.....

My little cousin has been battling ulcerative colitis for a while now.  Heavy drug regimens haven't done much, and her condition has worsened.  Last night she collapsed with an extremely high fever and internal bleeding, and going into septic shock.  They had to do emergency surgery at 1am to remove her colon and save her life.  She's in the ICU right now and the prognosis is good, but if you could keep her in your thoughts me and my family would appreciate it.  At 19, this is something she really shouldn't be going through.  :(

Aw, that's just sad Jd. :( I pray the prognosis stays good and she continues on the road to recovery. :salute:

JD,

I'm a surgical pathologist.  I totally understand your concerns and the misery your cousin has gone through.

The next thing I'm going to say may sound odd but it's true:

Undergoing a total colectomy will be the best thing that has happened to your cousin health wise in a long time.  It will end the inflammation that has plagued her life and will protect her from precancerous changes that UC patients are so at risk for.

There are more potential health benefits that I'll skip, but rest assured, this will help her long term.

I know the colostomy will be miserable for a young healthy girl, but 10 years from now, her perspective may be different.

Best wishes to all the family, Tom. This can't be easy for her psychologically, but at least physically she is on the right path. The head will follow suit in time once she's processed it all - though she might need a bit of extra help to begin with.

All the best for her. Anxiety and stress is worsening that disorder, so some SSRI's (with a physician's recipe) and psychotherapy might help.

Thanks everyone.  :salute:  I haven't had a chance to speak to her yet, but I did speak to my aunt.  They're moving her into a regular room today or tomorrow from the ICU.  I'm thinking of going into the city to see her Saturday if I can.

Just wanted to give an update to everyone.  She's home!  They released her from the hospital yesterday afternoon.  Another operation is going to occur in three months.  I spoke with her earlier, and she's in good spirits.  She knew that this operation was something that might have to happen, and she's OK with it.  Her mom told her about this thread, and she did read it, and asked me to pass along her thanks to all of you.  This forum really is the best.  :salute:
