Knife design
on: October 20, 2013, 08:05:56 PM
I'm working on a fixed blade and want your thoughts on this design and edge grind.

I'm thinking of doing a flat grind only to one side like a kiridashi for easy of sharpening (only one side. What do you people think. The steel will be a piece of Damascus that I won in the passaround.
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Have you thought about angling the blade slightly up similar to the Kershaw Needs Work?  It makes it much easier to use the entire blade length on flat surfaces.

Then how about adding somewhere for your thumb to sit and a little kick at the back?

I like it :) I usually like the look of less pointy blades, though I don't really have one... But, like I said, looks nice, and good suggestions, too

I don't have enough steel for that. Some of the steel was cut for another project :(.

That looks ok but I like the design I have made. I don't understand the purpose of angling the blade though ???

Steve, are you left of right handed?

I ask cause you say you are going for a kiridashi style edge/chisel ground. I ask cause the real kiridashis are sharpened on the other side as opposed to the western style blades. Gives you the ability to get closer to the object you're cutting. The western manufacturers sharpen the blades on the wrong side cause it looks cooler in the pictures. ::)

Left handed on top, right handed on the bottom.

Yup Im a smartdonkey!

Steve how are you going to do stock removal?  I really want to get a good belt grinder someday when I learn to make blades but Im not there yet.  I have a small 1x30 I use for shaping parts, but it wouldnt be the greatest for blade making.  Im still afraid to cut up the damascus I have.

I was toying with making fixtures and milling off the stock but I dont know about that either.

That it is. I think the nickel in it is what makes it hard to cut.

Design has been transferred to the steel. The only other change will be holes to mount the handle material, in this case, black carbon fiber and some black chain mail screws. Maybe a small pry tip on the end.

Take it slow and easy and it will cut. Don't force it. Use a newer sharp blade.

have a tub of water close by and dunk it during cutting so it doesn't get overheated.

it might be tough to tell if your burning it or not because of the color of the Damascus.

I've never worked with it.
