what do you use to oil your sak?
on: January 26, 2014, 02:24:29 PM
Looked at the victorinox multitool oil, seems a tad expensive for 5ml, what are the more frugal alternatives? Up until now ive just used a bit of gt85.

3 in 1 works good. Gun oil. Minerial oil works nice. Wd40 works in a pinch. Or in my case, wd40 gets used a lot.

I usually use 3 in 1, although one day I tried some of my wife's sewing machine oil.
I found it worked perfectly.

Militec-1, I am a gunsmith so I always have tons of different oils laying around but that one is my favorite, by a long shot.

A cheap option is mineral oil, which is known as Liquid Paraffin here in the UK.  Should be available from your local chemist as it is sold as a lubricating laxative.

Wal-Mart pharma grade mineral oil, it costs $1.50 for a real big bottle. Easy application with a toothpick and it works great!

I shell out for Vic's oil. It's a little pricey but you don't need much of it.

Ive only tried mineral oil and vic oil.  Mineral oil works, but the vic stuff is noticably better.  All the custom I build get Vic oil before going out.  Ive gone though 5 bottles since I started, but it only uses a few drops per sak.
PM me or email sakmodder [at] gmail . com if you are looking for custom SAK work.

Food grade mineral oil.

For carry, mineral oil since it is cheap and food safe.  For some cleaning action, Breakfree CLP.  If the knife is clean but joints are a little stubborn due to oxidation or just a bit tight, Nano - Oil.

I use Rem-Oil, a firearms oil. It's a fine machine oil with micro-teflon in it.

Do not use baby oil. It is 98% mineral oil but that 2% in it ruined my favorite huntsman. I can use the scales like a crayon. Johnson is not your friend.

I use the same oil on my knives as I do my firearms surfaces.
Shooters Choice Lubricant Elite

Any moving parts on my knives (pivot points) same as my firearms I use white lithium grease.
Just a dab will do ya!  :D
