Do not use baby oil. It is 98% mineral oil but that 2% in it ruined my favorite huntsman. I can use the scales like a crayon. Johnson is not your friend.

That's good to know.  Though I would never use it as I can't stand the smell, I was always told it was just mineral oil with scent added. I had no idea it would attack Cellidor.

3 in 1, WD40, gun oil.
I use oil to clean not really lubricate, I never just add oil.

Anyone who hasn't tried nano-oil really should give it a shot IMO. :)

I know it's good to oil it, but how often do I need to do it?

When needed, one tiny drop on the top (pivot) and one inside (sides). Wipe the knife afterwards to clean any oil sipping out.

I usually oil mine after they get washed with soap.

I don't really make my knife dirty so I don't wash it with soap. I use a dry paper tissue to clean it.

So it's really that 2% babies that makes it wrong?

Tuf Glide Marine, I concern more about rust proofness more than anything else.  Lube is important too, but what good is the tool is it gets rusty at the joint?  :)

Victorinox Multi-Tool Oil and only:

Tried a few others but liked this the most. A small bottle costs few $ and can last a very long time.

+1 for the Victorinox Oil. It's a little bit expensive but it works 100% of the time.

I remember when something like lard or maybe thick grease was used for long term storage of old army rifles.

Anyone know what exactly it is?  The site doesnt say.  Is it food safe? Toxic?  Looks great for firearms but on SAKs Id still feel safer knowing what Im putting on.

Why would somebody want to use the NanoLube oil for SAKs when it appears to be both (a) more expensive than the original, proven Vic's own SAK oil and also (b) not food grade? (I may be wrong but this is what I see)

Does anyone know of some downsides to WD 40?

WD40 is not good for lubrication, it's main purpose is to displace water and help unlock rusted parts which then are expected to be lubed with a proper oil.

Also WD40 stinks quite bad and is not food safe.

I only used WD40 once I think on some bad old SAK that had its blades stuck with solidified gunk and rust, to help release that, then I washed and cleaned it thoroughly and oiled with Vic oil as usual.

All is relative.
Most (regular) people will use any oil available. It is very unlikely the tiny drop you put on the pivot will end up in your food and it is also unlikely that that minute amount that ends up in your food will have any noticeable effect to your health, especially considering the amount of chemicals/germs we eat/smoke/drink/touch daily.

You have people that insist on using non SS knives to cut food (rust..) and worry about whether a mole of an oil will get on their food and kill them.  :o
